The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Ljubljana - Alibi Hostel is in the best location in Ljubljana. It has a hundred beds on three floors. There is free internet and wi-fi is throughout the building. The front desk is staffed at all times by very friendly and helpful people. They don't offer breakfast. This hostel accepts credit cards. There are colorful and somewhat startling murals on the walls that may not appeal to everyone. It can be very noisy and there is a party atmosphere. It has been renovated but still looks tired and worn and there is not a high standard of cleanliness.

The Location

The location is in the heart of old own Ljubljana, near the river bank. Just outside the hostel is the river bank street where people hangout and meet up. There are shops, nightclubs, stores, and bars just a few minutes' walking distance away. The neighborhood is vibrant and fun. The hostel is easy to find since it is right in the heart of old town. It is easy walking distance to the bus and train.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are several types of dorm rooms. They are set up with four beds, two beds, twelve beds, eight beds, and seven beds in the bunk bed-style. The larger dorms have people really packed in. The bathroom facilities are separate and are clean but rather shabby. Only the double rooms are en-suite. Hot water is intermittent due to the number of people using the showers. Bed linen and towels are provided.

Common Spaces

There are two lounges available -- the one on the top floor is very nice and the other is not very appealing and worn looking. There is also an atrium. There are no laundry facilities and no kitchen for guest use. There are secure lockers.

Summary

This hostel caters to a party crowd and large groups. It is easy to meet people and to quickly find out what is happening in the town. It has a prime location and information on activities is readily available. They have a travel desk for booking activities and can supply rental bikes. In addition to booking trips throughout Slovenia, the hostel publishes a daily list of events in the town that is posted at the reception desk. If guests are only in town for day or so and not too picky about cleanliness or noise but want to maximize their time in Ljubljana, this would be a good choice.

Pitiful
If you're a geezer on a titty-trip for the weekend and like stumbling into dorm rooms full of people that are peacefully asleep at 3 in the morning and like to shake them awake and ask them how their night was then start wrestling with your mates on the floor and when people tell you to please be quiet tell them you don't care and they should have gotten a single room and they can get ****ed, then this is the place for you. Filthy and inadequate bathroom, poor security, staff unwilling to intervene when you make a complaint at 4 a.m. that there's a rugby match going on inside your dorm and automatic fluorescent lights throughout the building that flick on at the slightest form of movement (i.e. every five seconds). I paid in advance for two nights and chose to leave after the first and was told there was no way I could have a refund on my second night, so they get double the charge for the poor sap who suffers sleeping in the place on the night I'd paid for and didn't use. Do not stay here.

There are good things and bad things about this hostel. I'll start with the bad. How people can say this hostel is clean I will never know. The dorm was not cleaned once in the time I was there (six nights), although I did once see the cleaner in the shower/toilet. On my last day I checked under the bed to see if I had left anything and there was rubbish and two mouldy biscuits that had been left by previous occupants. How it doesn't attract vermin I don't know. The internet is free but painfully slow so don't rely on it. However, the reception staff are excellent -- really friendly and helpful with perfect English. Ok if you don't mind roughin' it for a night or two at most.

Avoid this hostel at all costs. While staying here in August, my first night I was put in a room which the staff knew had a significant problem with bedbugs. And what do you know, the next morning I woke with around one hundred fifty bites all over me! My face, arms, back, chest, legs, ankles, almost four other people had the same problem whilst I was there. They did not refund my money or offer an apology. It is a continuing problem they told me, and they blame it on other backpackers bringing the bugs. Rubbish. I had been travelling for five months and had nothing like it. They put some people in a room they know has bedbugs and offer no apology after they attack. The bites lasted nearly ten days, and were extremely itchy, annoying, and embarrassing. Avoid this hostel and the owner at all costs.

There was absolutely nothing special about this hostel. Very boring atmosphere. It was pretty clean and the staff were very helpful but as far as a good time, it was pretty low on the list. It is in a good location right near the river and a close walk to food, bars, and clubs. If you get in a bind like I did and can't stay at the Celica I guess this place wouldn't be too bad.

This is the best hostel I've stayed in. firstly because of the location. There are no buses, etc., you can walk to the train station, walk to the pub, restaurant etc., etc. And secondly because of the really amazing staff. I've never met nicer people than the Ljubljanans; the people at this hostel especially. The showers were clean, and the rooms were clean. You'll meet new people, too. This is the best hostel available.
