HI - YHA Queenstown Central Hostel

Hostelz.com's Review

HI - YHA Queenstown Central Hostel has one thing going for it -- location, location, location. It's within three blocks of the Intercity Bus station; within two blocks of The Station, terminus of many tour buses; and within one block of Fergburger's, Queenstown's best-known hamburger place. It's also close to the waterfront (you can see the lake from the dining area) and convenient to shopping.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Unfortunately, YHA Queenstown Central is more a budget motel than a hostel. All rooms are ensuite, even dorm rooms. There are no common bathrooms, though the staff may let you use their bathroom if you've checked out of the hostel. The combined kitchen/dining lounge area is tiny, especially considering the hostel's size, and it closes for the night at 10 p.m. The laundry also closes. After 10 p.m., the only place to go in the hostel besides your room is the hostel lobby (also tiny, containing three kiosked computers and nothing else).

We had a five-bed female dorm -- two bunks and a single. Beds have reading lights. Single, double, and triple rooms are also available, though at a steep price. The rooms' real annoyance is their heating system; in all rooms, even private ones, the wall heater shuts off every two hours and a button must be pressed to turn it back on.

Common Spaces

The combined kitchen/dining/TV lounge on the topmost floor has a fine view, but it is very, very small. Since the kitchen closes so early, supplemental mini-refrigerators are provided at each end of the hall; unfortunately the one at our end of the hall was broken. There are three kiosked computers and Wi-Fi is supposed to be available, but it was down while we were there. There is a luggage storage room at reception, and there are a few for-pay lockers on the topmost floor -- but again, far too few for the number of guests.

YHA Queenstown Central is in the heart of the action at Queenstown. If that's what you want, and that's all you want, you won't be sorry to stay there. If, however, you want to stay in a traditional hostel, with common areas and a chance to meet other travelers, this is not the hostel you're looking for.

Very affordable
I stayed here twice and will return. My single rooms were clean, comfortable, and quiet because I requested quiet rooms. The staff were great and very helpful. The location couldn't be better! The lounge area and kitchen were adequate for my needs and it was interesting to see so many different meals being prepared. Unless you're looking for luxury accommodations, this is the best deal in town. Shhhhh, don't tell anyone.
Like a school trip
This place gives you a feel of being on a school trip, it's nice and clean, beds are good and the location is a big plus. But the showers -- they'll burn you alive one minute and the next one it's freezing. Oh, and the heating isn't that good, when I woke up in the morning i saw my own breath rising slowly against the roof. But the hostel is fresh -- stay here and take a stroll in the morning further down the street to the fergburger place (awesome burgers) and for breakfast you have a really good coffee shop/sandwiches place on the left side some hundred meters after fergburger.
Good location
Stayed in a twin room with en-suite here for a few nights. The room is clean, tidy, and reasonably sized. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The kitchen is well equipped like most other YHA hostels in New Zealand. Only complaint is our room overlooks the main street so it was a bit noisy on Friday/Saturday nights. The other thing is there aren't that many lockers so it might be difficult storing gear before your big tramp. (There is however a locked room for luggage.) Nevertheless, I will choose to stay in this hostel again.
I stayed here on two seperate occasions when visiting NZ. I really like this hostel, the bathrooms and bedrooms are very out of date but spotlessly clean. The communal area is great, small but it's a small hostel! The view from the lounge is gorgeous over the Lake! The staff are really friendly and have loads of information about Queenstown and surrounds. The central location is brilliant for all the sights and amenities, especially Fergburger just further up Shotover Street! If it weren't for the decor this hostel would get 5 stars!
Nice place to stay. Very central without being noisy. A bit weird that there was carpet on the walls, but everything was clean and we had a TV in our room. Used to be a hotel and its not been renovated since so it looks a little tired. Kitchen is small but not busy, is on the top floor and has fantastic views of lake wakitipu.
