Hanoi High Five hostel Reviews

In Hanoi's hectic city centre, backpackers need an oasis of calm away from all the chaotic traffic; plenty of smart hostels are available, and one of the more competitively priced is High Five Hanoi hostel.

The Location

When it comes to location, it is a five- to ten-minute walk south of the Long Bien bus station. The number seventeen bus travels between Long Bien and T1 at Hanoi's International Airport. As well as the hostel, Hang Tre Street (like most of the city's Old Quarter) is full of motor scooters, street vendors, little shops, cafes, and everything else a traveler would expect. The bank a hundred metres down the street offers a fair currency exchange rate.

From the hostel, all the highlight museums and other landmarks are close, for those brave enough to go sightseeing on foot! Alternatively, pedal-powered rickshaws and motorbike taxis haunt every street corner.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel occupies a building that has four floors and no elevator. Each floor comprises a ten- to fourteen-person dorm, including a female dorm. Each dorm has two toilets and two showers (shampoo and body wash are provided, as are complimentary towels). A hair dryer is positioned outside some showers. Everything appears new and works well.

There are two large lockers under each bottom bunk. Mattresses are firm, yet comfortable. A flexible reading light and two electric sockets sit behind the occupants' head. Warm, good-quality, clean bed linen is standard. It can get chilly in Hanoi! Very complete privacy curtains surround each bed, but do not block out the main room light being turned on after dark. In the mixed dorm is a neutral-colour decor. The female dorm has hot pink Hello Kitty bed linen! The smallest dorm has ten beds, but the atmosphere is peaceful. For those backpackers wishing to mix and meet new people, they have at least nine roommates to start a conversation with. It is dependent on the individuals how much socialising takes place.

Common Spaces

There is no common room. However, guests can sit in the two ground floor dining areas, without being hassled to buy anything from the food and drinks menu. Breakfasts are served in this area from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. At other times, tasty meals and fair-priced drinks can be ordered. There is a large-screen TV predominantly playing recent American pop music hit videos, but at a sensible volume. A small number of general paperback books are available to read.

The kitchen is not available for guests to use. Still, most guests seem content exploring street food options in Southeast Asia.

The dining/reception/tour information area is bright, colourful, and of a fair size, unless a large group suddenly arrives to check in, or is hanging around after check-out. Guests are generally in their twenties and thirties and a decent, interesting, international crowd of travelers are attracted to this hostel. The hostel is not ideally suited to guests wanting/needing a designated smoking area.

Summary

Most of the staff have some limitations speaking English with foreign guests, yet they remain calm, friendly, patient, and helpful. A small tours information desk is next to reception, so getting advice on taking trips in Northern Vietnam and booking tickets and accommodations is made easy. Discreetly positioned security cameras are monitored at the reception. Cleaning is thorough.

There is more of a hotel (rather than a hostel) feel about the place, despite there only being dorms and no private rooms! This is a good option for travelers coming to Hanoi.
