The historic Camphouse situated almost 1000 metres up Mount Taranaki / Mount Egmont at North Egmont is the highest commercial accommodation on Mount Taranaki / Mount Egmont which is an ideal location for people seeking quiet surroundings and stunning views of the North Taranaki coast and Central North Island. It also offers historic atmosphere and access to the beautiful forests and high altitude scenery of Egmont National Park.
It is the oldest surviving building in any New Zealand national park and is registered Category 1 with the Historic Places Trust.
After the Taranaki Land Wars in the 1860's, when it was used as military barracks in New Plymouth, the building was sledged to North Egmont in 1891 for use as accommodation.The camphouse was restored and upgraded in 1999. most of the historic features such as handwrought corrugated iron with gun shots and tongue and groove timber panelling are visible.
The Camphouse Today
The Camphouse today is modernised self-catering accommodation for up to 36 guests within the Egmont National Park. You are also very welcome to enjoy our "Mountain Cafe" " The Highest Cafe in Taranaki " which is nearby for tasty mountain meals and superb freshly brewed coffee.
