The Hostelz.com Review
Carbisdale Castle Youth Hostel is located on top of a hill in the middle of a beautiful forest with a lot of nice walking tracks. Because of the perfect romantic setting in the old castle, the atmosphere is quiet and exciting at the same time. A lot of old paintings, sculptures, and not at least, the legend of the "white lady" create a spooky surrounding.
The Location
The Castle is far from the next town and can´t be reached by public transport. The only way to get there is to catch a taxi.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are very large (ten people in one room) but that's all right since the rooms are very big as well. There's enough space to spread out and feel homey. The bathrooms are shared and there are a lot of showers and toilets scattered over the level. Everything is nice and clean and captured by the special flair of the old building (no washing machines, dryers).
Common Spaces
The rooms upstairs are great in the evening for quiet book reading and relaxing. There is a TV lounge in level 1 and a pool table in the cellar. On the ground floor are fully equipped kitchens with separate dining areas, so you can bring your own food and cook it.
Summary
Carbisdale Castle is a really nice hostel and it's worth going there! Breakfast and dinner are included. They always do a buffet and their food is excellent! The only disadvantage is the isolation of the place. There's not so much to do. It is very quiet since it is far from the next town. Nevertheless we do like the place because of its special atmosphere and the sovereign setting! If you walk through the castle in the nighttime, you feel like a ghost hunter.

Visited Carbisdale Castle September 1988 as member YHA Australia My memories are impressed in my brain. Have travelled all over the world, staying at YHA Hostels, none more impressive than Carbisdale Castle. Arrived by train to Culrain from Glasgow, after train travel from Bournemouth, England, and Australia before that. Had a marvellous few days, with great weather. The hospitality was superb, and meeting up with YHA members from all over the world. And enjoyed an Evening of Scottish Dancing and Concert. Dining facilities, sleeping, and general living superb. Marvellous views over the countryside and loch from my room. A great little pub down the hill and across the fields to enjoy true Scottish hospitality. I am at present planning another visit to Scotland and the Highlands and Carbisdale Castle. — Albert Harrison , Australia (2012-02-06)

it's not a hostel in the common sense... it's special. but it feels great to spend a night in a real highland castle. it's huge. dinner and breakfast available. they say that there's also a ghost....???!!! — mirj (2006-02-04)
