The Hostelz.com Review
The Location

The Black Rooster Hostel is located at 501 6th Avenue West within easy walking distance of the downtown area and shops. The owners of the hostel offer free pick up from the ferry, bus, and train terminals. But drop-offs are not offered for any of these locations so you will have to find your own transport upon leaving the hostel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel offers single and double rooms as well as dormitories. The private rooms are quaint and well furnished with comfy beds. Linen and towels are provided and there is cable TV and a telephone in each room. Dorm rooms are standard and offer linen and towels. Shared bathrooms and showers are located on each floor. The bathrooms are kept clean but offer very little privacy. The ladies' toilet stall does not have a lock, and the showers only have flimsy shower curtains as separators and offer little space to put your items while showering. The mens' are set up even more strangely as the showers and toilets are along side of one another and the stall walls are very low, therefore you may need to advert your eyes if the next stall is occupied.

Common Spaces

The common areas include a kitchen and a large lounge area near the reception. The hostel also has a café on the main floor which is open for breakfast and lunch. The lounge has a computer terminal that provides free internet access to guests. Free wireless internet is also available for people with laptops. There is also tourist information and maps. The lounge is a nice place to sit and read or to play a game of chess. The kitchen is fully equipped but is very small. There are two small tables for dining the place can get quite crowded if more than two people are trying to cook at one given time. There is a BBQ on one of the balconies but it has neither coals nor grill. The hostel is advertised as having a gym area but the room is filled with random items and looks more like a storage area than a recreational area.

Summary

The Black Rooster Hostel is kept clean, and is conveniently located within minutes of downtown Prince Rupert. It offers a quiet and comfortable place to lay your head. Overall it's a very average place to stay. If you are seeking a party place, then keep looking.

Lovely, quiet place
I enjoyed staying at this hostel -- it is clean, quiet, and the people are friendly. It's a short walk to town, and considering the nightmare reports I had from friends staying at the other hostel in town, I was delighted to have chosen this hostel. The pickup from the ferry was brilliant -- so much better than joining the queue of persons waiting for taxis. It would have been great to have free bag storage, rather than paying for a locker, but I understand why they need to do this. Would also have been nice not to have to pay for a towel.

Nice place to stay.
I would recommend this place. It was my first stay at a hostel, I enjoyed the visit. The owners were nice and so were the guests.

This hostel is a great place -- the owners are very friendly. The place is very clean, and quiet. prices are great! I stayed here with my two children many times, I now live in Burnaby and when I come up North to visit I stay here, it's a great place to stay. I recommend this to my friends and others that are looking for a nice, clean, quiet, and affordable place to stay. thank you for everything, Black Rooster, your kindness is appreciated.

Would come back and stay there, prices were very fair. I would highly recommend to anyone. Owners very friendly. the rooms are decorated nicely, the place is kept very clean, and the in-house restaurant's food was excellent. One of the nicest places we stayed at during our three-week vacation. You can't go wrong staying at this place.
