The Hostelz.com Review
The Cardiff Backpackers Hostel has everything you could want. Bar, shop for essentials and souvenirs, internet, laundry, and the cleanest most orderly hostel kitchen we have seen! The bedrooms may be a little on the cramped side, but the beds are ok and it is clean. The door doesn't have a lock, but you can get a locker key (5 quid deposit – refundable) so you can lock up your stuff. There is also a security door to get up to the bedrooms and to get in off the street you need to be let in by staff.

The bathrooms are ok. A nice touch is the free toiletries shelf in the bathroom (akin to the free food shelf in the kitchen). Someone has put a lot of thought and care into the planning of this hostel which is much appreciated. Free tea and coffee all day and toast, butter and a range of jams were available free for breakfast in the fabulous kitchen. The hostel is fun and relaxed but very well run and organized.

Cardiff Backpackers is located a short walk from the bus station, central train station and Cardiff castle. It's a little confusing to orient yourself when you first get to Cardiff, but the easiest way to exclain how to get there is from the castle, walk down Castle Street in the opposite direction to the shopping mall. Cross the bridge, walk a little more, then go left onto Lower Cathedral Street. You can see the hostel from Castle Street if you look for the yellow and purple building on the corner. From the bus station or central train station go down Wood street and over the bridge, then go right after a couple of hundred meters onto Clare Street. The hostel is a couple of hundred meters down Clare Street on a corner at a mini round-about.

Be careful, once booked they will charge you full amount even if you do not arrive at the hostel! They never mention initially that you are liable to pay entire amount if you do not cancel forty-eight hours in advance.

A nice stay, I even headed back to Cardiff Backpackers for another night. The staff were a great help and very friendly, the kitchen and TV room were fine and the bar was a good spot. There's a huge screen TV in there as well, and it's social too, which is important. The rooms were acceptable and lockers were good. Toast for breakfast is better than nothing! An excellent hostel in a good location, too.

My first impression was very positive and I felt that this was one of the best hostels I had stayed at. Unfortunately this all changed on the second night, when one of the staff celebrated a rather loud birthday-party in the bar until 2 in the morning without any consideration for guests trying to sleep. My room was located far from the bar, but I could still hear the music through my earplugs. It's an ok hostel, but I'm personally not going back.

This "purple house" as I call it is located three minutes from the center of town by the river. Staff are friendly and helpful. Our room was basic but nice. It's a lively place, with a bar full of people, even at 3 a.m. when we got back from town. There's a TV room and Internet and pool. There's plenty to keep you entertained and interesting people to meet. It's ideal for young folk, maybe a bit too noisy for family groups. I would definitely recommend it.

This is one of the best hostels I've stayed in. It's very clean, colorful, and has a happy atmosphere. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The location is within walking distance to everything. (The bus and train stations and city center are all a 10-15 minute walk.) The women's showers and bathrooms were clean. FYI: The female dorm room 34 has a couple of regular, non-plastic mattresses.

I really enjoyed my stay here! Coming from America, we fell in love with Wales from the start and the staff at this hostel made us feel right at home in the city. The free sheets were a nice surprise and the happy hour was a great time to meet everyone!

Everything is great here except for the plastic mattresses and the cost.

A social place, but you don't want to know what you are sleeping in. There are inflatable pillows, and as for the mattress, well, I felt lots of iron inside it. The showers and toilets are okay, though one of the toilets was clogged the whole morning.

It's a great place, close to town. The inside smoking was a bit of a nuisance, either at the bar or by the PCs. Elaine is a doll!!

Great hostel. Nice staff (one even spoke a bit of Dutch) and great facilities. The kitchen was great and the cooker even better. :D Rooms were nice and showers and toilets were really clean. It is close to the city centre, bus, and train station.

The location is quite convenient, near the rail staion. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The bathroom is not as excellent as I expected, but acceptable. The bar downstairs is excellent, and you can enjoy a movie and coffee there with many good people. It is a lovely place.

Friendly staff, rooms ok, mattresses are very very slippery!, the location is ok, DVD with movies, bar - but in the same place with kitchen, so you have to eat your meal on bar table. Smoking.
