The Hostelz.com Review
Located on the outskirts of Abergavenny, in Brecon Beacons National Park, Black Sheep Backpackers is a good place to enjoy adventurous activities in the park, without leaving the comfort and convenience of being in town. With walking and cycling trails nearby, and a castle in town, there is lots to see and do in Abergavenny.
The Location
This hostel is across the street from the railway station. It's about a twenty-minute walk from the bus station and the town centre. If you arrive by bus, walk down the main road away from town until you get to station road (about half a mile), turn left up station road, and Black Sheep Backpackers will soon come into view on the left.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms have sturdy, wooden bunk beds that come with sheets, duvets, and pillows. There is central heating, but the rooms still can get a bit chilly at night. However, the duvets are quite warm. There is ample space for packs, and a few hooks for clothes. All the rooms have locks, some keyed and some with code entry.
Upstairs and in the basement, there are showers and washrooms, as well as more washrooms on the ground floor (for the pub). The washrooms on the ground floor are gendered, but the others are not. They are decently clean, and the showers are hot.
Common Spaces
In the basement, there is a self catering kitchen, and a lounge. The kitchen is adequate, well stocked with dishes and pots, and has a dining area attached to it. In the kitchen, there is free continental breakfast in the morning, and free tea and coffee at any time. The lounge has comfortable couches and a television in it. There is a a great pub downstairs. It is cozy and inviting, with a fire in the front room, and there always seem to be a couple locals around who are happy to chat to travelers about their journeys. There is also a pool table in the back room. There is also free wireless internet throughout the entire hostel, which works well.
Summary
This is a decent hostel with a good price. It is close to both the outdoors and town, and with a friendly neighbourhood pub located downstairs to unwind in at the end of the day. We will definitely stay here again if we are back this way.

This place must have gone downhill. Stayed there in Aug. 2006 as part of a Haggis Tour. We had the hostel to ourselves, so there was no reason for the place to be filthy. Showers were disgusting with mould, empty shampoo packets on the floor, and broken doors. There was no hot water in the evening or the morning, and one shower had a split hose, meaning the water simply poured out of the hose. The light in our bathroom did not work, and the safety rail on the upper bunk was held on by a plastic Tesco's bag tied around it. The sheets on my bed had not been changed. Breakfast was ok as long as you didn't eat the meat or the eggs (microwaved eggs?). The pub downstairs had music playing loud until late, ending any chance of sleep. The was frequented by bikers and a scuffle broke out while we were there. Add this to the fact that there are no locks on any doors in the place, and you don't feel very secure. — Bazz (2006-09-22)

We spent three days at The Black Sheep Backpackers in Abergevenny and can highly recommend this hostel. Whilst the backpackers is in a pub there is a separate section downstairs for those staying, which provides cooking facilities, peace and quiet, etc. Then when you want to enjoy the atmosphere of the pub it is as easy as going upstairs. — Anon (2005-05-01)

After five extremely hard days on the Brecons I was ready for a warm comfortable bed. On my arrival at the hostel I was given a very warm welcome, and nothing was too much trouble. Having discovered this little gem I will be back! — Nick Hawkins (2004-12-09)
