The Hostelz.com Review
For super-clean rooms at an unbeatable price (where else can you get a 5-bed dorm for €5?) check this place out. It's in the fairly quiet town of Guarda. Only Portuguese or the occassional Spanish tourist seem to frequent here, so you can get a close to authentic taste of Portugal.
Albergue de Juventude da Guarda is fairly close to the historic old town. From the bus station go up the hill on Rua D. Nuno Alvares Pereira (turning right if exiting the main entrance of the station). Coming to José de Lemos garden, turn left, crossing through it to Rua Vasco Borges. After the intersection the street heading the same direction you've been going is Av. Alexandre Herculano. The hostel is on the left, and the entrance to the hostel is on the side.
The hostel itself is quiet, and since not too many people stay there, you may find you have a room to yourself, which can be good or bad. There's certainly a lot to be said for some privacy and space to yourself. Party animals might find it a bit disappointing. Some of the rooms have balconies--a big plus.
The bathrooms have soap and paper towels supplied. For the showers, the undressing/dressing area is open to the rest of the bathroom, but since there are not that many people at the hostel it may not be a huge problem even if you're shy. The bathrooms are clean, as is the rest of the hostel. Besides being clean, it has an open and fresh atmosphere.
A common room with tables, couches, and TV round out the amenities of this place. Basically it's a spot to lay your head. It is connected to a school which isn't in session in the summer.
The staff at the hostel are helpful and speak a little English. Lockout is 12 noon to 6 pm. No meals or laundry service are available at the hostel. There's no internet at the hostel, but the tourist office in town supplies free internet service.
Despite the fact that this hostel may not have all the bells and whistles of a hostel in the big city, the Albergue da Guarda is highly recommended for its comfortable rooms, excellent prices, and good location in Portugal.

I stayed in this hostel in February and it was ok if you only want to sleep. The people at the reception didn't spoke english at all or so little. You cannot check-in before 6 p.m. which was a big problem for me because I took the night train from Spain and it arrives at 6:30 a.m. The room was nice and even if it's was bunk beds they weren't the cheap one I've seen in a lot of places. There's no kitchen and no breakfast(which I don't mind). The 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. lockout is a big too much. On the good side there's free internet available in the building in front of it until 8 p.m. but only weekdays. Anyway, for the low price it's worth it. — Alex (2006-03-01)

My stay here was good, but making the reservations was a bit hard. There is technically a way to book online, but after entering your information, you're asked to proceed to another site (which is in Portuguese) to confirm the payment. As far as I could figure you had to be registered with the site to do this. I ended up contacting a person in the Portugal hostel association – Solange Batista — by e-mail and she made the reservations manually for me. At least in regard to this hostel (at the time I went, in July 2005) reservations are probably not necessary, at least for the hassle they were. Otherwise, the hostel's a good place to stay. — Kathryn (2005-09-13)
