The Hostelz.com Review
Accommodation is expensive in Waikiki -- one of the cheapest hostels is the Polynesian Hostel Beach Club. Located on Lemon Rd, it's next to three other well known budget accommodations. The location is awesome -- barely a block from the famous Waikiki Beach. There's also an ABC shop close by, great for self-catering options.

The building is showing its age, but is generally clean and tidy inside. Wooden floors make the building feel more open and less stuffy. Like most of the other hostels the common areas are open air and located on ground level. Which is great when the weather is fine, but when it's not you can hide away in the TV room. There's hammocks, wooden benches, cheap internet facilities, and a kitchen. You can also borrow the body boards, lilacs, and beach towels for the day.

Dorm rooms are four-bed or ten-bed and have one toilet and shower in each (located in the same room). The water pressure is good and you're guaranteed a steaming hot shower, which is a rarity in large dorms. While not completely spotless, the bathroom is large and there is ample space to get changed. Although in some rooms, the ceiling fan in the bathroom is old and noisy, which is annoying if you have someone getting up to use the bathroom lots during the night. They have air conditioning in every room (which is rarely used), and there's also several large portable fans. The only downside is that lockers are absent and you'll have to resort to chaining your items to the bed or storing them downstairs in the small room with other bags piled on top. There are also no blinds in the dorm rooms, which might be a pain if you can't handle sleeping during the day without them if you need a day room.

The Polynesian Hostel is a good budget option for Waikiki. While not completely spotless, the hostel makes up for its negatives with the price and friendly social atmosphere. It's Waikiki anyway, so it's not like you'll be indoors all day! Cheap (and sometimes free) events are organised every day for guests, ranging from harbour cruises to $1 drink nights, BBQs and even dodgeball in the backyard. The hostel is well known and you can hire Roberts Buses from the airport -- they'll drop you off out the front. The hostel charges an extra dollar for credit card payments and you're required to give them a small key deposit.

Brilliant
This hostel was great. I had a fantastic time there and made some friends I think I will have for a long time. I found majority of the staff friendly and approachable. Cant wait to go back there one day!

Very good location, awesome facility!
i had a blast at this hostel! the rooms, bathrooms, common areas were very clean. yummy free breakfast. some of the staff was wonderful and some of the staff was not very helpful at all. good guy that works there has the guns tattooed on his chest, he was real helpful. lots of cute girls, cool dudes staying there. i will be staying there for sure next time i'm in waikiki.

Fuckin Awesome
don't have much to say but everyone and anyone go there if you're planning to stay for a few nights or even ten years. loved every night I spent there. apart from the 10 p.m. curfew which wasn't that bad, everyone respected the rules and cleaned up after every get together! met some good friends there as well, definitely going back soon. place is clean and tidy.

Fun
Friendly, awesome staff with a comfortable atmosphere. The location is fabulous just one block from the beach. I even had a view of Diamond Head right out of my room window. Love the sounds from the zoo -- soothing bird calls just put me to sleep! The daily activities like Hanauma Bay and sea kayaking were awesome, affordable, and tons of fun. After day one, didn't worry about my stuff as it was obvious it was safe. Bunked with a flight crew (stewardesses and stewards) what a blast! The staff really took great care of me and evenings were great fun as everyone gathered together to talk about their day, share experiences and the occasional pizza/beer, but quiet at 10 sharp every night. I highly recommend the surf lessons with Jomar!

Fantastic
this hostel is in a great location (better than most of the major four- or five-star hotels). it's right on the beach and the better part of waikiki beach (sunset beach). the staff are as helpful as to be expected. they seemed to be training someone new everyday though. shelly was nice. I found the place to be bustling but not noisy. walking by the other well-known hostel in the same street there were fifteen or twenty people partying in the dorms most nights. the only downside is the kitchen which could do with a facelift (and a kettle). oh and the one tour i signed up for (sunset cruise) never happened and i came back at 5 p.m. especially. but overall i was very pleased and with the hostel and would recommend to people of all ages coming to waikiki.

Great people, great staff, great hostel. The rooms were fair for the price but it paid off by its location next to the whole Waikiki beach scene. I highly recommend.

We stayed in Feb. 2007. we're from Ireland. Staff were friendly -- we arrived at like 2 a.m. and they still were helpful! rooms were basic but what do you expect for $25 a night? clean and cool though. beach is a short walk, so is town. plenty of ABC stores nearby for all you need. roommates friendly. hide any valuables but private rooms have lockable doors and your dorm room is lockable, just remind other roommates to lock it before they leave. go to moose's on tuesday --they give you a free drink if you're from the hostel! (a guy at top of stairs will meet you and give you a dollar. ok, a dollar may not sound much, but it's one dollar a drink night on the menu, plus BBQ night all you can eat at hostel, only 8 bucks.)

great location and great value for the budget backpacker. We stayed in a double room which was clean but a little too hot as there was no air con and the ceiling fan was slow. but overall -- good value and about a two-minute stroll to the beach. They run cocktail nights and day trips at reduced rates which are good value.

Having stayed in many hostels over the past seventeen years, this hostel is one of the worst. Trying to reserve a room with a pre-payment, the desk person didnt know how to fill out a receipt. When he did provide me with a receipt on a 2"x 2"scrap of paper, he wrote down the wrong name on the receipt. Later in the evening, I had to spend thirty minutes literally begging for my room! The valet parking took some getting used to. They keep all the keys in a styrofoam cup. When I asked for my keys, they gave me the cup to sort through. So much for security! The fan was so noisy in my semi-private room that I had to shut it off. So, I sweltered and listened to the drunks yelling outside. Guess that I got what I deserved staying in Waikiki.

I was there for 9 days in May-June 06. The location in exellent, well within walking distance Diamond Head Park, Waikiki Beach and a long walk to Ala Moana. The dorms were acceptable with the exeption of the fans (not ceiling fans) that made a tad too much noise to fall asleep immediately. Overall the international staff was/is very friendly and always have some activity planned for the day/night. Shelly the manager is very down to earth and knowledgeable. I would definitely recomend this place to any solo traveler.

I stayed here for almost three weeks. I had the best laugh here over any other hostel I stayed at on my travels. The staff were lovely. There was always something going on every night. I really enjoyed the day trips and it is so central to shops and clubs. All in all a great place to stay, and tell Mark I said hi.

I have stayed in hundreds of youth hostels all over the world and I would rate the Polynesian as one of the best! In fact, I stayed there with my seventeen-year-old son who was far happier there, chatting away with other young people from around the globe, than he ever was in those luxury hotels we had previously stayed in. As for the staff, they could not have been more helpful. We hope to stay there again on our next visit to Waikiki.

I stayed at this hostel for seven nights and it was really unsafe! My backpack got stolen! The room was locked, so I don't know how somebody could get in. They do not have lockers as they say on their Web site! My Chinese roommate even got his new notebook stolen! The hostel did not even apologize for the incident and the owner of the hostel (who is never there) told me and the Chinese guy that they couldn't do anything for us! I mean, the door was locked so what else can you do as a guest to protect your valuables! I was very angry and the second bad thing was that I cancelled the last three nights 48 hours in advance because I switched to the Big Island and they refused to give me my money back! I paid 10 days in advance and they tell you that they cannot give refunds! So in fact, I lost 60 dollars because of the three nights and my backpack was stolen! Don't go there!

My brother and I fly standby; we had just stayed in the airport the night before and went back to this hostel to stay the night and leave in the morning. The guy charged us for two nights! We couldn't get our money back, and we were out fifty bucks that, like most travelers, we didn't have! I was so disappointed with this place, and I've stayed in hostels around the world. It was dirty, nobody was around and our "private" room was not private! I hated this place and I suggest you stay at any of the other hostels in this area.
