Paila Hostel Lakeside is a small hostel on the busiest street of the Lakeside area of Pokhara and right in the middle of where everything happens. While its highlight is definitely the cosy, semi-open-air common area, the rooms are also welcoming and comfortable.
The Location
The hostel is located in the famous Lakeside area of Pokhara, which is the most popular destination for travelers to the city. However, despite what the name might suggest, it is actually not on the side of the lake. Quite the contrary, it is situated on the most touristy street of the area amidst a wide variety of bars, restaurants, local-style eateries, supermarkets, souvenir shops, and tourist agencies. In fact, right under the hostel, there is a Momo restaurant and bar serving meals in the style of Nepalese street food. While the closeness of all these amenities might prove to be quite convenient, the downside of it is that this location can get extremely noisy with the loud music from nearby bars at night. Moreover, street vendors and the beeping of public transportation might wake you up before sunrise in the morning.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel offers small dorm rooms on several floors on the upper stories of a tall building. The dorms are attractive and comfortable. Lockers are provided free of charge and are big enough to store a backpack. The beds are equipped with thick curtains to provide some privacy and block out the light from outside. Each bed has a bedside lamp and an electronic socket, even if these are of really poor quality. Each room has a balcony with nice views over the Lakeside area but at the time of the review, these were locked. The rooms are en suite and the small but clean bathrooms have hot water twenty-four hours a day.
Common Spaces
There is only one common area, but this is very inviting -- it's a a semi-open terrace with trendy wooden furniture and cosy cushioned areas and is a great place to watch Pokhara come alive in the mornings. The free breakfast, which is included in the price of the accommodation, is also served here. It is an omelette, two pieces of toast, jam, and tea.
Summary
Paila Hostel Lakeside is a mid-range-category hostel both in terms of prices and what it offers. With a central location, comfortable rooms, free breakfast, and unlimited hot showers, it is good value for the price even though it is definitely not for those who are woken up easily because it is in quite a noisy area.
