The Hostelz.com Review
Hostal Metropol is a three minute walk from Puerta del Sol, making it central to all of the attractions in Madrid. It's located on the corner of Montera and Gran Via, a busy street with lots of shopping, fast food, and cinemas. The feel of this site is not unlike a Spanish Times Square; it's very lively and feels quite safe despite the fact that prostitutes frequent the corner. The Metro stop (Gran Via) is directly in front of the building.

The hostel sleeps 200 in private rooms as well as shared coed dorms. The decor is basic--institutional but cheerful enough. Rooms are clean and very well appointed, with phones, televisions, and private bathrooms. Some even have little terraces. Although the views of Gran Via are lovely, the area can be very noisy well into the night, especially on weekends.

The common area is large and features free internet computers (30 minute limit), books, lots of tourist information, and soda, beer, and sangria for sale. There is no common kitchen, but there is a refrigerator and microwave for guest use. Breakfast is included and consists of a nice variety of bread, cereal, cookies, yogurt, etc. A bottom sheet, pillowcase, and blanket are included in the price as well. The staff is very helpful and most speak English.

Overall, Hostal Metropol is a great deal. It's clean and well-run, and prices are very low considering the en-suite rooms and other perks. Although it is very noisy, the location is convenient, and makes for a great home-base while staying in Madrid.

Stunningly poor
In my years of traveling, this would rate in the bottom three of hostels I've stayed in throughout the world. The staff have little english, and really don't seem to care much about what's going on. They themselves openly flout the country's smoking ban, which applies to accommodation like this. The rooms are not quite filthy, but certainly not clean. Cigarette buts were wedged into the window frame, and there was dust over the floor. The bathroom was dilapidated at best, though everything functioned. The room had no storage other than under the bed, and the mattress on my bed was so bad (springs poking into my back) that I swapped it with that on another bed. They only provide a bottom sheet, but no top sheet. The rooms have no air conditioning or circulation, other than leaving the window open. But the window overlooks a very busy street, making sleep impossible. The only good thing about this hostel was the location. I noted that none of the other three people in my room actually spent the night in the room, making me come to the conclusion that this is a hostel for those who want to party, and not those who want sleep or have standards for comfort or hygiene.

Affordable and Fabulous Location
Hostel Metropol is a wonderful place to stay. It is no farther than ten steps from the metro and a three-minute walk to the Puerta de Sol. The staff are friendly and speak English. We stayed there for three nights in a private room with twin beds. The breakfast was ok -- cereal, coffee, tea, rolls. There is no curfew, which is great for early checkouts. Also the area is lively and I felt safe! As an added bonus Hostel Metropol was the most sociable one we encountered on our trip across Spain. There was live music and a cheap bar! I would stay here again. The only downside is that the beds are not the most comfortable but that didn't matter to us.

I stayed in this hostel in June 2006. The location is very convenient (Gran Via metro station). The staff is very helpful. The rooms are clean. I stayed in a 3-beds en-suite which was very nice and quiet. The people staying in this place are young backpackers and older people. The bar is great and cheap. The breakfast is good.

The location of this hostel was great! we were able to walk pretty much everywhere from here, and it is literally right in front of the metro station at Gran Via, so if you want to take that it's super convenient too. There are definitely hookers everywhere in front of the hostel, but it's not really a problem at all, even when we came back really late at night/in the morning. The rooms are clean and cheerful, we got a private bathroom in the room with five beds, and it was just a nice atmosphere. The staff were really helpful and it was just a really homey place.

Whenever I think about this hostel, some Almodovar films from the 80s come to my mind :) They offer a very good breakfast, free Internet, the people at the reception desk are all very nice and helpful and the rooms are quite comfortable (and very clean), although they don't have lockers inside. It's located two blocks away from Puerta del Sol, so you can easily walk to any place from there. Oh, if you are not a heavy sleeper, then take into account that many room windows overlook La Gran Via avenue, so it's quite noisy even at night. The common room is very big, but for some reason when I stayed there it was always empty (December).

Great hostel. We stayed here for three nights and four days in early June. We had a three-bed private room, which was nice. It's in the middle of everything, 2 minutes walking distance from SOL. Beware, I wouldn't bring kids to this area "red light district" 24/7. There are prostitutes everywhere all day and night long. But after a while you learn to ignore them. The staff are super helpful, especially Alex who showed us the town. It's noisy at night, so a few sangrias help the sleep. I would definitely stay here again. :)

This hostel is perfectly situated — Metropol is within walking distance from some of the best sights in Madrid! It is also just steps away from the Metro station, so it is very easy to get to, even when lugging bags. It felt like a reasonably safe area, even for a female travelling solo. The hostel is very reasonably priced as well. The only downside was that the set-up didn't really facilitate as much interaction as I would have liked. But you meet lots of people at breakfast and if you go down to get a soda or watch TV. Neat view!!

If you're looking for a place to stay in Madrid, look no further! The location of this hostel is central, the facilities are great, and you get free Internet access and a huge breakfast. The staff here are extremely helpful and they can give you a lot of information on what to do in Madrid.

Stay here. This place has en suite rooms, and a great rolling program of foods for breakfast (and take some of those chocolate biscuits for a snack later on). It's in a good location, too, right opposite the Metro and a stroll from buzzing central sites. It has a good mix of young people, too. Oh, and we happened to get a brilliant balcony for drinking wine and watching the police and prostitutes below. There's no need to go any further.

It has a great location, splendid breakfast (caffeine-starved coffee apart), good free Internet, it's clean throughout, has potentially great balconies for watching the city buzz, helpful staff, and a friendly atmosphere. The man who spends the early hours manning the front desk is a little grumpy, but who'd blame him?!

So I admit, the hostel is on a sketchy street (Hooker Blvd.) but you can't beat the clean, private rooms and the great breakfast.

This hostel is great. There are tons of cheap hostels to choose from nearby but this is byfar the nicest and safest. The staff are VERY nice and it was within walking distance from many main attractions in Madrid. Have a great trip!!

It has a new style. A great combination of an old hostel with a young and friendly atmosphere! And the staff are really very very friendly.
