Anicha Hostel does what it says on the tin. It's an affordable room in the heart of Cuenca, but not much more.

The Location

As with most Cuenca hostels, the accommodation is only a few blocks from the town's main square and cathedral. The building is a heritage-listed, double-story beauty off Gran Colombia. The dorms have access to balconies while interesting artwork is present inside. However, patrons must be warned of the limitations heritage-listing affords the owners. A large bolt sticks out from the floor in the centre of the dining room and multiple visitors either scraped, scratched, or cut open their feet on the metal chunk. When notified of the danger, the owner simply shrugged, "The building's heritage-listed and I can't move it." Note that as of this review, there is no signage for the hostel on the street. Patrons must push the doorbell to gain access from the staff.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Both dorm and private rooms are kept clean and comfortable. Eight beds in the small dorm room is a bit of a stretch, but it does not present too much of an issue. The squeaky doors do, however; the cumbersome wooden doors make such a noise when opening and closing that sleep can be interrupted multiple times a night. As for the bathrooms, both men and women share toilet stalls but have separate shower areas. The shower areas do need some attention -- hair in the drain is a common issue and the soap dispensers are typically empty.

Common Spaces

The main common area is fantastic -- it is well-lit and contains plenty of hammocks and plants. There are also extra common areas on the second floor if privacy is desired. The Wi-Fi is second-to-none, and likely the best attribute of this hostel -- it is super fast. A common sight in the communal areas is the hostel owner's puppy. This dog is simultaneously adorable and annoying. It is incredibly naughty and likes to bite the pants of unsuspecting lodgers. But just when you want to curse the thing, it turns into a cuddle machine. Those with any dog allergies should take note.

Summary

Anicha Hostel is good, but not yet great. It is a relatively new location and likely experiencing some teething problems, but with some tinkering this place could excel. When the excellent Wi-Fi is a hostel's best attribute, there is definitely improvement still to be made.

• By car: Take Turuhaico to Ave de las Américas 2 min (850 m) Drive 2 min (1.3 km) Drive for 230m. Turn right 850 m. Continue to Calle Gran Colombia for 800 m. Turn left onto Calle Gran Colombia,you will reach us, Anicha Hostel in Calle Gran Colombia 12-25.
• From Aeropuerto Internacional José Joaquín De Olmedo Guayaquil:
• Drive: Get on Puente de la Unidad Nacional from Av. de Alarcón and Av. Benjamín Rosales 5 min (2.7 km) Drive from Troncal de la Costa/E25 and E582 to Cuenca 3 h 4 min (190 km)Take Imbabura to Calle Gran Colombia 7 min (2.5 km) and you will find The Anicha Hostel.
