The Hostelz.com Review
Wilson Hall is a dorm in the middle of the Scottish Agricultural College campus. The scenery around the campus is beautiful -- mix the secluded locale with the agricultural focus of the college and the result is lovely trails of true Scottish countryside. Wilson Hall can certainly offer a retreat from extensive periods of travel.
The single rooms are perfect for recharging before a flight at Prestwick. During the summer break, the hostel is pretty empty, but during the school year many students occupy the hall. The environment is relatively clean (for a college dorm), and the rooms come with complete dorm setup with a desk, wardrobe, chair, and bed. The bathrooms are setup with separate shower, sink, and toilet stalls.
One is more likely to encounter students rather than fellow travelers in this hostel. The staff (mostly older students) is laid back and friendly. There is a small common room with a television near the main desk. Although the listing says breakfast is included, the staff told us that is a mistake, although perhaps that's because the school was on break during our stay. There is a farmer's market on the campus operating at certain times during the week. Either way, one should stock up on a bit of food in Ayr before arriving at Wilson Hall.
One can easily arrive to Auchincruive by bus from Glasgow (Glasgow to Ayr, once in Ayr city center, transfer to No. 52). We asked the friendly residents of Ayr to point out the specific stop for Auchincruive. The bus is the only way to get back and forth between the campus (Auchincruive) and Ayr city center, as nothing is within walking distance of the campus. Ayr city center also has inexpensive (and fast) bus services to Glasgow-Prestwick Airport.

Hostelz.com Guest Reviews

The best part about this place was the staff. The man who checked me in and the one who helped me in the morning were excellent and very helpful. The place itself left something to be desired. It is a university dorm, and obviously so. It is in dire need of some repainting in the rooms and a serious scrub down of the showers. There were lots of rowdy boys downstairs and loads of mosquitoes inside the place. For one night it was fine but I think longer would have been bad. It's too far away from Ayr as well and it was like 1.20 pounds to get into the town by bus! That's more expensive then the same trip in Edinburgh. On another positive note you do get breakfast included, which is cool and useful. — Michelle (2005-08-24)
