The Hostelz.com Review
Engholm Husky Hostel has to be one of the nicest hostels in the world. Situated on a working Husky Farm, the "rooms" are actually individual log cabins that are beautifully decorated with hand-carved furnishings are local handicrafts made from things like slate, stone, and reindeer antlers. The owners and employees speak impeccable English and are incredibly friendly, and the temptation to plunk down hundreds of dollars on a multi-day dog mushing tour might be too much to overcome. Toilets and showers are in the main cabin, and are spotless, impeccably clean, and fantastic. Breakfast can be provided for an additional fee.

But in addition to being one of the nicest hostels, it's also one of the most expensive. Prices are set per person, plus a cabin fee. It's not a problem if there are multiple people in the hostel the help shoulder the cabin fee -- but if it's empty, you'll saddle that entire fee yourself.

Another problem is that the hostel is 6 kilometers outside of Karasjok. It can be walked (there are footpaths), but there is little public transportation. Outside of summer, it can be a very cold 6K walk. The person who checked me in recommended hitchhiking back to town the following morning, as hitching is not dangerous at all in that area of Norway.

Despite all the expense and the location issues, Engholm Husky Lodge is an amazing place, unlike any other hostel in the world, and very much worth a visit.

Beautiful surroundings; amazing artistic furniture. The huskies' howling at night was fantastic, and we even got to take a young huskie for a walk with the staff. We had a fantastic, relaxing couple of days.
