5 Home from home -- perfect!
I can honestly say that The Albatross Backpackers is the most friendly and welcoming hostel that I have stayed at. Ruth and Mark (the managers) are only too happy to help with anything you put to them, and when it comes to recommending some of the many amazing activities there is to do here, they are definitely the best people to ask, having actually done them! It is situated in a perfect location, being only a seven-minute walk to town and a two-minute walk to the beach. The hostel has a separate TV room, and a general hanging out space which is completed with a cushion corner! It's the perfect environment to meet lots of new people all in one hostel! The hostel is also Kiwi Green and everything is recycled. If you stay here, you are even doing your bit for the environment too! I found the Albatross a home from home and am sad to be leaving! Watch out, what might have only been a three-day stop over might turn into being a couple of months!

5 Great!
Best backpackers I've stayed at so far! The Tross is one of those places where people keep extending their bookings. I have stayed there for about three months while working in town, which I wouldn't have done if it wasnt a nice place. The facilities are good, enough showers/toilets, big enough kitchen. It has got lovely places to sit outside in summer and the ocean is only a minute walk away. One of the things that make the difference is the separate television room, which makes the hostel a good place to actually chat to people and be social! There is always something fun happening, either games, the weekly dinner or quiz night at the local pub! And since the managers have done loads of the tours themselves and are really enthusiastic about them, dont be surprised if you leave town after having done your own take-off in a plane.

5 Homely, clean, friendly with really helpful staff and a great wood fire. There is plenty of free car parking and it's in a good central location.

5 This hostel is fantastic. It has the friendliest owner of any hostel I've been to, someone who was always on hand to give the best advice and offer his knowledge. This place has a good atmosphere and a very cozy lounge based around the fire, making it feel very homely.

5 The Albatross Lodge is a set a bit away from the center of town. Like many of the backpackers in Kaikoura, it is a converted house. The Lodge has fairly small dorm rooms and an odd system of having to walk through the ktichen in order to access the showers. However, these inconveniences pale in memory when one walks into the kitchen and common rooms. The kitchen is spacious and well equipped with pots, pans, knives, wine openers and all the other things you don't tend to pack in you backpack. The common room has couches that surround a coffee table and makes a homey atomsophere for chatting with your fellow travellers. Outdoors, there are also picnic tables for enjoying the fresh ocean breezes.
