Wonbin Safari Hostel's primary activity is organising camel tours through the small desert near Jaisalmer. Although you can stay at the hostel independently of going on a safari, be ready for a rather aggressive campaign in which they are trying to convince you to participate.
The Location
Jaisalmer is so tiny that as long as your hostel is within the city walls, it does not matter at all where exactly it is located, as you will be able to reach everywhere in maximum twenty minutes on foot. Wonbin is situated at the foot of the castle; the bus station is literally about five minutes from your door. However, the train station is a bit further away but still in walking distance. Jaisalmer is so compact that you have everything only a few minutes away -- food shops, restaurants, clothes bazaars, and vegetable markets are all abundant.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Wonbin Hostel offers you small dorms with around four beds inside each. They have a female-only dorm available as well. The rooms are colourful and en suite but quite simple and crowded. They also have a problem with water that sometimes stops -- you are in the desert after all! The arrangement that the hostel promotes is that you come to sleep here for a night, then go on an overnight safari while they keep your stuff and then you return for another night. It can get quite awkward, because as the prices are quite low, some people book three nights online expecting to find their beds and belongings intact in their room. However, if the staff knows you are leaving for a safari, they will pack up your stuff for you and move it to the reception, where it often remains unsupervised. Make sure to clarify the arrangements before leaving for your trip to avoid a nasty shock upon your return!
Common Spaces
Wonbin is housed by a typical desert villa called a haveli. Just like most havelis, this one has its social space on the rooftop. This is really nice and it overlooks the hill on which the castle is located. There are tables and chairs up here and you can order food and drinks that you can then consume in full view of the breathtaking panorama. The hostel focuses on South Korean travelers and provides massive discounts for them -- therefore, it is no wonder that most of the guests are from Korea. This is no problem in the dorm, but if you end up going on a safari where you are the only non-Korean, you might feel a little left out.
Summary
The prices of Wonbin are incredibly low all year through. The reason for this is that they are hoping to get many guests to which they can sell safaris. If you are not planning to do a safari, you are guaranteed to feel really awkward here. If you are, you can probably find both cheaper and better quality safaris elsewhere, but at the same time, it is quite convenient that they arrange everything for you and you get picked up from your doorstep.
