Friendly and good value
True, this place doesn't come with many amenities. True, the old lady is of age and perhaps at times unpredictable. I was in the double room, a tiny room with a mattress, a table or two, and a fan that wouldn't work well enough to take away any of the extensive heat in the morning. The trick is to not be in the room during the day, to talk to grandma when she seems to be confused about something, and to realize that this has to be the cheapest option around. Showers and bathrooms work fine, there is a (very) small breakfast served in the morning and Ali is the friendliest bloke you can find. He'll answer all your questions with a smile and he'll try and give you tips and pointers to help you know your way around town and perhaps find a few strawberries not listed in the guides. If you're looking for comfort, this is not the place for you. But if in town for just a night or two, freaking out about the costs of accommodation in Singapore, and you don't mind a bit of spartan housing, this place is yours for a buck or two, it's located in Little India, family friendly and if you're lucky, like I was in may '08, the bedbugs will have checked out.

Do not stay there
this is the worst hostel i ever stayed in -- and i traveled extensively in south america! yes, it is cheap -- but my bunk bed broke down while i was in it! (and i only weigh fifty-eight kilograms). if somebody would have been in the lower bunk bed, they would probably be dead! i got hit with the teapot deliberately by a family member. Bedbugs everywhere. grandmum comes into your room during the night and shouts at you in chinese and while you're gone during the day she might go through your bags!

Bloody good place to stay!
I've been coming to Ali's Nest for more than ten years now and it's got to be the best deal in Singapore -- $10 a night for the dorms, which only have four beds; $25 for private room. Fans, air con; hot showers; only thing missing is free beer! Ali is very friendly and helpful -- it's a nice, quiet spot away from the madness.

Very Bad place
I thought Ali's Nest is the convenient place to stay for a couple nights but I was surprised. at time i came into the house that I saw many Goddest statues and the air circulation in the Ali's Nest is very poor and smelled bad. The first night i slept at the dorm room was like being in hell because many bedbugs on my bed. So, we moved quickly from that place to find the convenient place. We just stayed for one night only. Until we backed to Indonesia, I found many frozen red spotted surrounding my neck, under my hands and shoulder. It was my first bad experience in Singapore, because I felt with the cheapest price $10/person/nights to stay a couple nights that I could feel comfort but I didn't find comfort feeling. people who want to go to Singapore must be more carefully searching the new place in Singapore by internet because sometimes they didn't give you the reality.

I give this place four stars, not because the way the rooms looked but because this is a very cheap and welcoming safe place. This is a family style guesthouse, and the guy who owns it is a very friendly and helpful guy. He lives there with his family which gives this place a really warm and cozy feeling, like being at home. The room we had was not much more then a windowless box but it was clean and enough for us. There is a cozy kitchen upstairs where you can make yourself coffee and tea for free the whole day, and which you can use to cook if you want to make your own food. Downstairs you can sit and relax if you want and use internet. The day before we found Ali's Nest we had a little experience of an other guesthouse around, which was a pretty horrible experience for twice the money. We were so happy to have found Ali's nest and we felt so welcome! Don't expect too much luxury, but then again the price is so low that I bet this is one of the cheapest places in the whole of Singapore, and the location is also just perfect! It is in Little India but the street is very quiet and just two minutes away from the heart of it. Next time in Singapore, Ali's Nest it will be!
