The Hostelz.com Review
Babel Hostel was once one of the best in Wroclaw, though it seems to have lost its energy to be the best. However, as one of the cheapest accommodations in Wroclaw, it still drives the customers in with the promise of a bed and breakfast to start your morning.

The Location

If you are coming into the Wroclaw Glowny train station, this hostel is only about two blocks away. Simply walk to the main street in front of the station (Pilsudskiego), cross the street, turn left and walk down Pilsudskiego about a block. Kollataja Street should be only a block away and the hostel is about half a block up on your left. Look for the black and white sign with The Stranger logo. The walk into the main town is about ten minutes and the walk to Ostrow Tumski will take you about twenty minutes, but Wroclaw is relatively small and very safe so it's a nice walk. One warning -- the hostel is located off of a very busy street where traffic and construction can be heard all night. Bring earplugs.

Rooms and Bathrooms

All of the rooms in this hostel a dorm rooms of various sizes. All of the beds are bunk-style and are made of metal so they are very squeaky. The mattresses are pretty old and not very supportive. There are no locks on the doors, however the hostel does provide small lockers for valuables. All of the floors are hardwood so they don't really look dirty, but a few minutes of walking around in your bare feet will tell you that they rarely every sweep or mop.

The bathrooms have a very large amount of mold in them, both on the walls of the showers as well as around the baseboards of the room. The staff is fairly good about mopping up the dirt on the floor, however no other cleaning appeared to take place during our stay. The bathrooms also do not have any windows so there is no ventilation and they often smell very moldy. Since there are only two bathrooms for forty people, and no separate toilet, there is often a long wait for the bathrooms. There is, however, a good supply of hot water and plenty of hooks to keep your things off the questionably clean floors.

Common Spaces

The common room is definitely the highlight of this hostel. With several couches, a table football table, a raised mattress area, computer with free internet, and projector screen for movies and video games, it's easy to see why this hostel is popular with the university crowd. This is where plenty of people spend the night chatting with new friends. The internet goes down quite often, but they do also have free Wi-Fi.During our stay there were many Polish residents coming to stay there, so it's easy to find a local to chat with about food or culture. The only downside to this is that the staff often enjoy chatting it up with the Polish guests and often non-Polish speakers are hesitant to join in. The entire hostel is nonsmoking.

The kitchen is another area that could use a good scrub-down. The sink is surrounded by mold and the cereal containers have caked-on crumbs and dust that show they haven't been washed in months. They do provide two types of cereal with milk, toast, jam, butter, coffee, and tea. And the best part is that they leave breakfast out until 1 p.m. so you can sleep in late without missing it.

Summary

Babel Hostel has many signs from previous years thanking their guests for their high ratings. Unfortunately their ratings are falling due to a lack of cleaning and a rather tired staff. Until they clean up their act, this hostel is a good bet if all you need is a bed to sleep on for as little money as possible. If you are looking for a clean and quiet place, though, this is probably not a good bet.

5 Real Good
the staff are so friendly and right from the word go -- they gave us all the information we needed. thank god they spoke english as the lingo is hard to pick up in poland. they beat us at foozball a lot, but we let them. it's like a ten-minute walk into town, good location.

5 In a city without many options, this place is fantastic. Unbeatable location, close to both the station and the city centre. Exceptionally friendly staff, spacious, and well-equipped kitchen with free tea and coffee, movies and X-box for rainy days, cool lounge for meeting other guests. this place has everything the backpacker needs at a reasonable price. The owners are obviously clued-up on what packers need -- they even sell earplugs! Admittedly, guests are welcomed by the urine stench of the sh*tty stairs, but don't let this put you off. This is the only place to stay in Wroclaw!

4 The Stranger Hostel Wroclaw was in a great location -- practically just across the road from the train station. A short walk from all the city centre attractions too. The rooms are large and there's plenty of room for your gear. There's a new kitchen and two new bathrooms also. The staff are very friendly and give you a map and tips of where to go and what to see. A great hostel for location, seeing the sights, chilling out in the lounge, catching up on emails (there's a free internet computer). Simple free breakfast too, and tea and coffee twenty-four hours. I would stay here again.

5 I loved this hostel. The staff were so friendly and helpful, and the price was fantastic. The beds were comfy, everything was very clean, and the other guests were very respectful and friendly -- I got sound, peaceful sleep all three nights I was there. I would absolutely stay there again, especially as it was so convenient to both the train station and the city center. Free breakfasts of cereal and bread, and butter and jam were very appreciated, too!

5 I have stayed in many hostels but this one was amazing! The staff were fantastic, the rooms and facilities were impeccable. Free Internet, free breakfast, washing service and a huge TV with a great range of movies if you felt like staying in. I felt completely at home the moment I walked through the door (at 1 a.m. after our bus from Prague!). It was within a 10-minute walk to the old town, and the bus and train stations were a stone's throw away. Don't let the crabby stairwell to the hostel put you off. There is gold at the end of the rainbow and for me, this was it! I didn't want to leave!

5 Beds are very comfortable, the bathrooms are top-notch (with funky transparent toilets), all the staff I have come across are great, and there is a decent social area. There are also extensive collections of DVDs and XBox games, and it is a stone's throw away from the train station. I've been to twenty-something countries this year, over eight months: Trust me, this hostel rocks. I will definitely be looking out for The Stranger Hostel brand in the future.

2 The inside of the hostel is very nice and the staff friendly. However, unless you are in a group, I suggest you don't stay. It is located on the 3rd floor of a very run down building. The stairs have no light and you have the distinct feel of entering a crack house.

4 This place is brand spanking new so it still felt a little incomplete. The Ju Ju Lounge was lacking in cushions (it was essentially just a wooden frame) and one of the windows had no curtain. However, this place has massive potential to be fantastic. The bathrooms are brilliant, the free movies a great touch and the entire place is spotless. Do not hesitate to stay here. You will not be disappointed.
