Great Time!
I stayed here first way back in June 1977 and had a great time! I was a shy, little twenty-two-year-old brunette from Chicago and met a bartender named Dave "Tex" and we spent some time together. In visits in later years, I learned that a lot of Texans come through here perhaps because the owner was from Abilene. Anyway, I heard the bar recently separated from the hostel -- too bad because the combo worked great!

I stayed here back in the nineties three times. Great laughs, great staff. I've still got the original T shirt. Rock and roll at its best. Whatever happened to Murdo the Scottish Zorro!

The Last Waterhole is exactly what it says on the tin. It's a hostel so obviously it's not the lap of luxury, but it's so much fun and full of great people and characters. The staff are the most friendly I came across while hosteling in Amsterdam and the hostel is in a fantastic location. I hear it's been knocked down recently? I'm not sure if that's the case but if so it's a real shame.

This is a rubbishy place to stay. People were having sex in the communal showers (which may appeal to some people), there was water everywhere and strange white marks on the sheets. If I had found the local rubbish tip (dump) that would have been luxury compared to this place!

Don't even think about staying in this hole. There is graffiti all over the place, and the beds are sh*t. There is also a major water leakage problem and there was water all over the floors of the bedroom. DON'T BOOK HERE.

I guess this was the worst hostel I ever stayed in. It is described as "clean and cheap." Cheap? yes (17 euro per night). Clean? NO! The room's windows were broken, the floor was a mess, and we even saw a MOUSE! The closets hardly even closed. The beds didn't have stairs, and you have step on the other bed for climbing; and for getting up you have to jump off (really hard in the middle of the night). Well, about the showers: anybody about 180, or anybody just coming down from the stairs can see all your body when you are showering (the walls were too low!). They say that the hostel was safe--strangers cannot come in--but it is so easy to come in; the door was usually open. They give you a card for free drink in the "Last Waterhole," but this Last Waterhole is not that bar! You have to catch the tram to the other Last Waterhole for the free drink, but it will cost you more. :) You have to eat your breakfast in the bar with a marijuana smell. They only give you coffee or tea as breakfast, and they do not give towels as it is written.

Me and eight of me mates stayed here in August, 2004. We got the flat next door which wasn't the worst; downstairs was a real sh*thole, with leaks all over the place, and the shower (which was downstairs as well) was absolutely filthy. The two rooms upstairs were grand, clean and fairly airy. The major plus of the place was the amount of weirdos we met, who just seemed to think it was grand to just walk in and smoke with you. We made plenty of useful contacts staying here, anyway. All in all, it wasn't the worst place. If I was going back, I'd probably stay here again if I could get the flat. I definitely wouldn't stay in the hostel; its a complete dump!

Just home from the dam, and I can tell you I dont want to be back. My friend and I decided to stay a night in the Last Waterhole...and the hole bit was somewhat correct. But saying that -- it was still good fun and cheap for 17e a night. When we arrived, the girl behind the bar was very friendly compared to other staff in the other places we stayed. The music there is fairly mixed but I did fall asleep listening to rage against the machine downstairs which i enjoyed! Okay, the hostel is dirty when I went to my dorm. I found someone in my bed, and I did get bitten by fleas! But you get what you're paying for, so I didn't care! The other people staying there were rather irritable. Would you believe the majority were students with rich backgrounds? By the way, when they say "breakfast included" they mean one slice of raw bread and weird tasting tea so be prepared. This place is purely meant for a roof over your head!

We, too, came here as a last resort. The staff here were very friendly, and it was in a good location. The hostel itself was very dirty and very noisy. The way they cleaned the sheets was by rotating them from bed to bed. The sheets had hairs on them. They would have a live band performing right under the rooms until 2 a.m. every night. The showers were kind of gross. So again, I would reccomend this place as a last resort.

This hostel was very interesting, to say the least. It has a great location, near the train station and sights. There's a great bar, friendly staff, and a decent breakfast. The beds were uncomfortable, and their idea of changing the sheets was switching them from bed to bed. The bar downstairs is loud until late, so if you want to get some sleep, go somewhere else. Overall, I had a decent time: I met great people and had an okay sleep.

I had an ace time in the Last Waterhole. It's a simple fact you get what you pay for, and trust me I've stayed in worse places that like to call themselves hotels at a way-higher price. The Last Waterhole is ace; it has a lovely atmosphere and loads of young open-minded travellers to talk to. Everyone is friendly. Yeah, the walls in the showers are a bit low, and I am a particularly tall girl, but you are only young once. I had the shower room to myself every time I used it anyway, so no complaints there, really. I will definitely be going back to the Last Waterhole.

My fiance and I stayed at this hostel/bar at the end of May 2004. I had done a lot of research in the week or so before I came to the Dam esp. by paying attention to all these 5 star recommendations on the Last Wateringhole, or should I call it the Last Resort. Let me just say "Cheap and clean hostel" is bull. They don't tell you it's 20 euros on the weekend, nor do they let you check out the room before you pay. Also, no refunds even though the hostel they use to book with (Runnerz) tells you that you have 1 hour for a refund, the VERY rude bar girl lets you know that they are wrong. And clean? No F'in way! I've been traveling throughout E. and W. Europe and this is by far the dirtiest hostel ever. Heres the scenario: You throw your money down on the bar, they buzz you into the back door, you walk past the communal showers that always overflow and run out of hot water by 10:45am. Then up a rickety dirty staircase with spraypainted graffiti walls, to climb to the 2nd and 3rd floors to find a smelly WC and a co-ed room that looks like you just stepped into one of those bad prison movies. You know, the ones that have stuff like "don't go to high school, go to school high" spraypainted on the partition walls, and big drawings of people tokin' up and naked ladies. Then after a day you realize that when they say "the rooms will be closed from 11-2 for cleaning" what they mean is, you cannot go back to your hostel because we are pretending to clean the sheets and are really just BSing you. Cuz let me tell you, the sheets on our 2 beds DID NOT GET CLEANED from day 1 to day 2 so who knows how long its been since thye were cleaned. I can prove it too, since I got about 10 big flea bites all over my hands and arms. My fiance also broke out with them on her arms and legs. If all this doesn't clue you in to the truth then I don't know what will. You're living above a bar, and so you get all that comes with it: the showers with low partitions so the guys can peek over them to look at the girls showering next to them, the water up to your ankles, the dirty WCs with vomit or very smelly stuff in them, the stuffy rooms with cavedrawings all over them, and no clean sheets ever, with a lock out from 11-2 and a very rude bar girl. thats about it! take my advice, go here only if you have no other choice, or are low on your dough and don't mind some fleas takin some bites outta your junk.

Fantastic, laid-back, great atmosphere--everyone there is great to get along with. The hostel was what you'd expect for a hostel for 15 euro in Amsterdam. The showers have really low walls, so tall girls (such as myself) try to get the entire bathroom to yourself. But overall I had a great time. The staff are great, and I will be going back!

This is the best place to stay in Amsterdam if you are looking for a laid-back atmosphere, great live music, great herb, and a friendly staff. It's the only place I found with frosty beer mugs. Also, they have a perfect chill-out/smoking room for guests only, with a huge window looking out onto the street.
