I spent a few days at Hostel Playa and would have loved to stay a few more weeks or even months. Amazing atmosphere, great people working there, and lots of fun! I'd come back anytime and can only recommend to visit Mario and his people when you visit Playa del Carmen!

Facilities are as good as you get. A "Bearded Monkey" type hostel, for those who have been to Granada. The owners know what travellers want and provide it very effectively (kitchen, music, lockers, DVDs). However, as sometimes the case with very popular hostels, the owners, particularly the lady, can be rude and hard with their "guests." So just be aware that this isn't one of those hostels where you find genuine hospitality -- it's very much a business that is so popular that treating guests well isn't necessary.

Come here and you'll never want to leave. This place is awesome. It has a great meeting area, with sofas, beds, hammocks, tv, tables, chairs, a rooftop, a nice kitchen, great rooms, clean bathrooms, and most important, great people.

This hostel is the best I have visited in Playa del Carmen, and all the Riviera Maya. Just look at the staff when you arrive at the reception, and the services, the clean rooms, the lounge area, kitchen, and most important, the music, the ambience and other guests. You just have to take a look and in most of cases you'll reserve with at least one anticipated day!

I stayed at the Hostel Playa in November of 2004. I was not too sure about the place when I first walked in, but the English-speaking staff were helpful and friendly. The large common area is funky but soon becomes comfortable, the kitchen area is adequate, the toilet and showers are clean, and the men's' dorm is the usual bunk beds. The St. Francis store is nearby, where you can get ready-cooked barbecue chicken at reasonable prices. The two bus terminals are within reasonable walking (with pack) distance. Every night they close a street in downtown Playa and there's a lot of energy there — mariachi music, vendors, the usual T-shirt shops, etc. Cheapest beer there is draft beer at the Tequila Barrel for 15 pesos. Best thing about Hostel Playa: the staff.

Fantastic Spot! Very clean and well-run. It was nice to be a little away from the main drag, but not too far. Conveniently close to a grocery store and cheap internet. Great common area with hammocks, comfy couches, and a roof to chill out on.

Nice place. It has a great little meeting area and a well-stocked kitchen. It's four blocks from the beach and just around the corner from the supermarket. A very relaxed little joint.

This is a place where once you come, you don't want to leave. Very friendly staff, very clean, it is so easy to stay for longer than you planned.
