The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Guadalajara - Hostel De María, an oasis in this big beautiful bustling city, is a comfortable and pleasant place to stay.
The Location
Located in the safe and pleasant working class neighborhood of Nueve Esquinas (Nine Corners), it is still in walking distance to downtown and most points of interest.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are clean but basic with skylights but no windows, except for one room -- so if you're someone who needs fresh air at night, request the front dorm. Each bed has a plug and a reading light, and there are lockers in all of the dorm rooms. The bathrooms are kept clean and tidy, and have beautifully tiled wash basins, but there are only a total six toilets and showers for twenty-two dorm beds, so if they have a full house be prepared to stand in line.
Common Spaces
This hostel has lots of wonderful common space, all graciously decorated in true Mexican style. At the very front of the building, overlooking a lovely square, is a sitting room with TV and free Wi-Fi. Also there's a small computer room with library. The kitchen, clean and tidy, is located in the back of the building, with seating in an adjacent open air patio, complete with a gushing fountain, and a visiting canary who lights upon the rooftop at dusk and serenades the diners.
Summary
Charming and authentically Mexican, Hostel de Maria is a fine choice to stay in Guadalajara, and the staff are friendly and genuinely helpful.

Excellent place to stay at. I stayed at Hostal de Maria for almost a week at the beginning of 2008 and can only confirm the positive comments. The rooms are great and clean, and so are the bathrooms. The breakfast includes orange juice, cereals, toast. The staff is very easy-going and nice, they even helped me to find a room in Guadalajara. You can easily walk to the city. Walmart, Sears, and a couple smaller stores are close by. If you need a place to stay at in Guadalajara, go there, you won't regret it! — Tim , German (2008-01-20)

One of the nicest hostels I've ever stayed at. Clean, secure, and great ambiance, and at US$12 (with HI card) one of the best bargains. Only drawback I could find was you have to shower before noon. The free breakfast was also a huge plus. — Nighcrawler (2007-03-07)

This was my first experience with a Hostel. The place was incredible, I highly recommend it. The staff are very freindly and the owner is one of the nicest people I have ever met. If you are looking for a great place to stay in Guadalajara that is central, clean, and friendly, I urge all to check out Hostel de Maria! You won't regret it. — Rod from Canada (2006-08-30)

Stayed here for a week in late Oct'05. One of the nicest, most laid-back I've ever been to. Comfortable, and friendly staff. — Steven B (2005-11-30)

I have stayed in a few different places in Guadalajara and this is the best place I have stayed. I spent two weeks here and had a great time. It is in a quiet part of the historical center of the city and I was able to walk to the Cathedral, many museums, traditional markets, etc. The hostel is super clean, the staff are very helpful and it has a great airy kitchen open to their courtyard. If this wasn't enough, the front door of the hostel opens up onto a park. Have fun!!! — Nico (2005-06-19)
