The Hostelz.com Review
Raintree Lodge is a very peaceful hostel about a half-hour bus journey from central Suva, making it ideal for those who wish to relax and slow down for a few days. It is priced slightly above average for Fiji. It is in a natural jungle setting, nicely landscaped with a lake, gardens, and a river. However, there is very little to do here (on purpose) and it can get quite boring.

The staff are efficient in performing their specific duties, if not overly friendly. There is a (mostly unmanned) tour desk with limited info for onward travel, but bookings can be made. Inquiries about local buses and the most cost-effective means of transport yield both inconsistent and incorrect answers. This is particularly frustrating given the hostel's isolation. Both linen and towels are provided.

The hostel has detached lodges, which hold a number of private rooms and varying sizes of dorms. These are designed to give a more homey feel with wooden staircases, balconies, porches with seating. The biggest (and cheapest) dorm is a living room-cum-crash pad that stretches from the front door to the loft, housing bunks interspersed with singles and sofa beds. Each lodge has a very small kitchen, which makes cooking difficult, and the restaurant is on the pricey side (but the food is great). The resort probably doesn't have enough bathrooms given the number of guests it can hold and the bathrooms are not very well cleaned. There are token-operated laundry facilities. One internet station is available.

Loud, dirty, unfriendly service
When I arrived, I had to pay the full amount for my one-week stay before even seeing the room. It turned out that the room was smelly and damp. The bathrooms and kitchen were so filthy that I refrained from using them. The place seemed overcrowded, the were people, luggage, clothes all over the place. Next morning, I was awoken by construction noise. The site was next to my room. Large areas of the place were under construction. This was surely not in sync with the advertising -- "a quiet, peaceful place." I raised the issue with the manager, who was defensive and quite unfriendly. I decided to leave and was asked to pay a penalty for leaving earlier than intended! After some arguing, the penalty was withdrawn. A very unpleasant experience altogether.

we stayed here for one night and it was a nice retreat. the staff were friendly, especially the new management who have grand plans for the resort. the food was ok and the beer cold, so what more can you want for a short stay?

Gorgeous, what more can I say? It was clean friendly and beautiful. Suva was bustling and a bit scary but harmless really. There's a bus ride in but it stops right outside hostel so it's not a problem.

This lodge is clean, with friendly staff. There is also a kitchen, so you can cook your own food! The forest park next door is beautiful--don't forget your swim wear! We were there when it was raining, but it is still a good spot. The museum in Suva is well worth a visit!

This is by far THE BEST HOSTEL IN THE WORLD. It iss clean and ultra modern, with a great fishing lake. We had a whole 10-share apartment all for us, and it's great for rainforest walks. The neighbour's dogs follows you everywhere, too. The Net access iss Stone Age, though. It's run by a really cool Aussie guy who, by the hostel he owns, is on the ball!!! STAY HERE!!! (Great bar, too.)
