The Hostelz.com Review
The Location

Denman Island Guesthouse and Bistro is located within walking distance of the ferry terminal and the small Denman Island village. The Guesthouse is an old 1912 farmhouse which has kept its aged charm. Denman Island can be accessed via ferry from Buckley Bay on Vancouver Island. The journey takes about ten minutes and the ferry carries cars as well as foot passengers. The crossings are every ten minutes or so.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The guesthouse provides dormitory accommodation as well as private rooms, all with shared bathrooms. Rooms are cozy with homey, oldish furniture. Linen is provides in the rooms but there are no lockers for your bags or belongings. The bathrooms are quite basic and could do with a bit of a scrub, so you may choose to bring along a pair of flip flops for the showers if you are slightly squeamish.

Common Spaces

There is a kitchen available for guest use. The usual facilities are available. There is also drinking water supplied. The water on Denman Island has a strong sulfuric smell and requires boiling or disinfection before use. You may want to stock up on food before coming, because Denman Island only has one small grocery store and a few local eateries.

There is a computer in the Bistro which can be used by guests and free wireless internet is also available for travelers with their own laptops. Coin-operated laundry service is available. There is also a lovely hot tub available for guest usage in the back garden, which may be a nice way to relax after a long day of hiking or bicycling. There are bikes for rent at the hostel, which can provide a good means to explore the beautiful island for those without a vehicle.

The dimly lit lounge has a TV and dark old furniture but there's a cozy balcony just along side of it, which offers a nice view of the mountains and provides a nice spot to read, chat, or play a game -- boardgames and book swap are available.

Summary

Denman Island provides great beaches, lovely walks, and an artsy community. Denman Island's Guesthouse provides a friendly environment, a great place to relax, and a good base to explore this unique island.

Stayed for 3 days over the July 1st 2005 long weekend. The family who owns/runs the hostel and cafe are so nice and hospitable. Rooms are clean and relaxing. Front porch or any hammock has a wonderful view and is great to read an entire book. I went to this island for the 1st time and was on my own. I hitch-hiked to Hornby island and went to the beach, and walked around the provincial park on Denman. I felt safe where ever I went. Just remember that this island like many of the westcoast islands, very granola. Enjoy it and go back for more!

A great place!!! I have been here three times. Accommodation and meals in the bistro were excellent. The hot-tub could be a little warmer. What a place.

I have not visited the guest house, but I have spent a couple nights on the island with a friend of my sister's and I absolutely loved every minute of it. If I were to decide to raise children anywhere in this world, Denman Island would be the place. What a beautiful, serene, place it is. Put my name on the biggest sticky bun every Sunday morning and I am hooked for life. This is a place that dreams are made of. Hope to return soon.

This is a well-known hostel and one of the better ones! They also do an organic farm foods supply service, have a cafe on site with friendly meals, sometimes live music, a road-side coffee shop, (with real dark-roast fair-trade beans), a hot-tub you can sit in under the stars, AND a rustic house and big property to explore. On top of this, they are walking distance from the ferry on Denman Island, and the whole island is accesable by bike or hitching. There are two parks to explore, lots of shoreline and a native culture centre, plus Hornby Island, which is worth at least a day of its own. I went for one night and kept staying.
