The Hostelz.com Review
If you are looking for a really relaxing and laid back place where you can enjoy yourself and having a rest from traveling, then Thunder Bay International Hostel is the perfect place to be. It is open all year around and sleeps in about twenty people. The owners, Loyd and Willa, started the Backpackers Hostels Canada in the late seventies and they have great stories to tell.
The Location
The hostel is situated at Thunder Bay eighteen kilometers outside the town where Highway 11 joins Highway 17 at Mackenzie Station Road. Greyhound buses go by and will drop hostelers off either in front of the hostel (make sure they know you are going to the hostel beforehand) or on the highway and then the owners will pick you up there. There is a gas station with a grocery store about three kilometers away so do your shopping before you go to that place. The beach, hiking trails, and swimming pools in the river are within walking distance. More hiking trails are within the Sleeping Giant Provincial Park which is about thirty kilometers away.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms (only single or double rooms available but for the price of a dorm bed), the kitchen, and the bathrooms are clean and tidy. You will live in the house of the owners and use their kitchen, so there are all utilities you need and you can use most of the stuff in the cupboards as well. Security seems to be very good with a lock for the door to the hostel and locks for the rooms as well.
Common Spaces
The common areas are huge and really cozy. There is so many stuff to take a look at, to read about the owners and their life -- so you have to go there to discover it yourself. There is a TV, hundreds of DVDs and movies, free games, and a book shelf. They have free wireless but you have to pay to use the internet. The property is huge so you can pitch up your tent for little money, go for a hike, or grab some wood for a bonfire at night.
Summary
This hostel is a good place to stay, enjoy, and get stuck. You can easily spend weeks there listening to the stories of the owners. Do you have a story to tell? Then do it. Loyd writes essays about everything. So you can read his collection (which numbers in the hundreds) or write your own. Or sit with Willa in front of the house, play with the cats, and let the days pass by. It's a fantastic place with great atmosphere -- it feels like home.

Hostelz.com Guest Reviews

This is by far the best hostel we have ever stayed in. The hosts are amazing people and it felt like a home away from home. Desperate to get back there again, never really wanted to leave. — Natalie and Omine (2006-11-12)
