Ayma Hostel Puno is a friendly and quiet hostel. It provides all the features of a hostel, such as affordable shared rooms and tour arrangements, but it also has some more upgraded benefits of a hotel. For example, there is always a concierge at the front desk that is very happy to assist with any requests.
The Location
Ayma Hostel is centrally located right next to a public square called Parque Pino. It is also right around the corner from the touristic pedestrian street of Calle Lima, where there are plenty of souvenir shops, restaurants, and banks. The main Plaza del Armas is about three hundred metres away. Puno is a fairly small city and the main touristic area is completely manageable by foot. The pier from where most tours start is just over two-kilometers from the hostel and the bus terminal is also just over two kilometers away. Both can be reached on foot or by a quick taxi ride.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Set up as a mix of privates, doubles, triples, and multiple beds, the hostel has five floors of rooms available. None of the shared rooms have bunk beds; they are instead comprised of twin beds. The rooms are clean and comfortable in size, even when the place is fully occupied. Each room has its own ensuite bathroom, with hot showers, toilet, and sink. The beds are comfy and the blankets are thick enough for the cold nights. Some rooms lack enough power sockets though, and there is often only one light for the entire room.
Common Spaces
On the main floor, in the lobby there are comfortable couches where guests can lounge. There is also a large TV there. However, guests do not tend to stay in this area except for the mornings while waiting for their tours to pick them up. On the fifth floor is the dining room, where breakfast is served every morning. The breakfast buffet is plentiful and provides more than the basic selections. Also, on every other floor there is a tea station set up for guests to enjoy hot drinks all day and night.
Summary
Ayma Hostel is a friendly, clean, and comfortable hostel. The staff are very caring and will try to help with any requests, especially with arranging tours. The hostel is popular with tourists and does fill up, especially on weekends. It is best to book in advance if it is a primary choice.
