The Hostelz.com Review
The Commercial Backpackers in Roxburgh was originally a hotel. Although it is no longer a pub, the inner foyer gives a taste of years gone by with its impressive staircase, and piano on the ground floor.
Mattresses and bottom sheets are provided. You will need to bring your own bedding, including pillows, or you can hire them from reception. There is no EFTPOS or credit card facilities. You will need to obtain cash from the tearooms, dairy or petrol station as Roxburgh does not have any ATMs.
The kitchen is well-equipped. Each guest is issued a set of cutlery, crockery, dish cloth, and tea towel in a box, which has to be returned to reception at the end of the stay. The lodge next door to the former hotel building contains dorms and a games room. From time to time during the busy summer season the hosts organise a table tennis tournament for the guests.
The hostel is popular with fruit-pickers in season (December to March) but there is generally room for travellers -- it pays to book ahead. The up-side of lodging with the fruit-pickers is that you can make new friends from all walks of life -- students, overseas backpackers, and locals -- who have chosen to earn extra cash from the district's orchards.

Warm friendly owners that welcome you with open arms. The Best place to stay if you are in roxburgh and in south island. A good place to stay is your are doing cherry picking, nectarine, apples, apricot as well. A must to stop by. Papa john & Police Pat is the best. — Joyce Cheng , Malaysia (2010-06-18)

Best hostel i have visited on my NZ trip I spend there for one and half month and my opinion? Hostel isn't new but has very specific atmosphere, it was built during golden fever so you can feel like gold miner. We had huge room for four guys with TV and it was very cheap and what's more John was like our father. He took care about all problem we had (broken car, lack of work) and he also took us on mountains with car and on his farm. typical man from NZ -- very friendly and nice. if you are looking for place where to earn money for your traveling just go there. — Vitek , Czech (2007-09-03)

Very nice hostel. Not very modern, but so nice and friendly people. I liked staying in this house for three months in 2004/2005!!! Spending Christmas in Roxburhg was so nice. Thanks to John and Pat!! It was like a big family there! — Katja (2005-11-10)
