Bad place to stay I've stayed in a few hostels in Darwin, and this one by far is the worst. The kitchen was awful. One frying pan, two saucepans. Then they closed the kitchen, due to building work, (offered no discount for this). The staff were really bad. They didn't seem to care about their job. When I checked in, the girl on reception didn't know where my room was, so I had to ask one of the other guests. Checked out a day early, and they didn't give me my money back. If you are in Darwin, don't stay here. — Dan , Ireland (2011-08-12)

nice atmosphere but cold showers! I liked this hostel although its definitely lacking a lot of features. The thing that disturbed me most was that the showers where cold (and I stayed in 2 different rooms)!
Good things about this hostel: nice atmosphere, restaurant (good food) and bar and pool, it's a bit away from the main road so it's not so loud, nice rooms with ensuite bathroom, friendly staff, clean room
Bad things about this hostel: cold showers, top bunk bed don't have anything to climb on you have to heave yourself up, mattress aren't too good, evening staff is unfriendly and sometimes you have to find the reception staff at the bar, aircon in room but not cool enough, no internet or tourdesk
Most people coming back from an adventure tour will be staying here. I stayed in one hostel in darwin before that one and the cavenagh was better, but probably not good for a long stay either, at some stage you wanna have a warm shower... — Felice , German (2009-08-09)
Totally below normal standards! I recently stayed at this property and was far from impressed, I stayed in a four-bedded mix dorm. The bunk beds were ancient and made this horrible squeaky noise every time you moved on them. Then carpet and walls were filthy and as far the bathroom -- from the missing tiles in the shower to the dodgy light switch (that if not fixed would surely cause someone a serious injury). The Cavenagh is definitely not somewhere I would be recommend other backpackers to stay whilst they are in Darwin. — Disappointed!! , Australian (2009-06-29)
Filthy, would not stay again! I was very disappointed with the condition of this hostel. I stayed here with Adventure Tours on my way to Kakadu, and after one night, I promptly canceled my reservation there for when I returned from the tour and booked elsewhere. Though it has a fun environment with a restaurant, bar, and pool, the rooms were filthy with beds that jabbed you in the back with springs. The girls already in our room had turned it into a pigsty. It was filthy, smelled, and there was no clean spot to put our luggage. When we approached the front desk with our problems, they shrugged it off, said they were booked, and sent us on our way. Very poor customer service, unimpressed, plus, it was loud all night long and the rooms were left unlocked by the other people staying constantly. Did not feel safe, had a terrible time, would not stay here again or recommend it to anyone I know. — Kathleen , USA (2008-06-08)

Great deal. I moved here after two previous hostels (Banyan View and Melaleuca) and it was by far the best one I stayed in in Darwin.
First of all, the staff is friendly, the pool is great and the rooms are amazing. You have a porch, very nice bed, Refrigerator in every room and your own shower. The kitchen's not too big but more than enough and the people there are great. It's 5 minutes away from all the noise, so you can party as much as you want and then go to sleep as much as you want.
One tip to those who stay there, there is free wireless internet in the Italian restaraunt across the road, which you can access from the hostel, so no need to pay. — Michael , Israel (2007-12-15)
I stayed at this hostel on October 2006. My room did not have bathroom. So, I had to go outside. It seems like to me that the bateroom had not cleaned up for a few month! It stinks! — Ayumi (2006-10-27)

It's OK I guess - was being done up when I was there in Feb 05 so might be a lot nicer now - pool was being replaced. Darwin is humid and steamy so the aircon is a necessity. The bar next door is nice and has good food. 4 bed dorms were quite scruffy but fine to sleep in - sheets were clean. The attached bathrooms are a bit whiffy and dated but no worse than your average hostel - service was a bit indifferent but overall I'd stay there again. I was there as part of a tour - if you do come to Darwin I would totally recommend going to Kakadu - it was absolutely amazing. — Solo Travel Girl (2005-12-21)
