Hostelz.com's Review
Banana Bungalow Hollywood is a very American-looking, motel-style hostel with an open courtyard with rooms on two levels arranged around it. There is space for cars underneath the first floor. The main sign outside says "Vibe" hotel, as it operates under that name as well as Banana Bungalow.

The Location

Although located on Hollywood Boulevard, this hostel is not in amongst the main tourist attractions. It is past the end of the star walk next to a large car dealership. This part of the street is still commercial and there is a supermarket and large Ross clothing store nearby. The airport shuttle will drop you at the door or there is a bus stop right outside. Alternatively, either side of the hostel, there are two metro (underground) stations within ten minutes walk on the same side of the street.

Security is pretty good, as guests are issued with a code in order to unlock the front door. The reception desk is on the ground floor to the left as you walk in. You can sign up here for their paid tours (including a Hollywood Celebrity Tour) or collect their handouts with local information.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are a range of room types available and they are all en suite. Our six-bed dorm is not cramped and there are large plastic trays under the lower bunks for storage. Lockers in the bedroom require you to add a padlock. They are big enough for a laptop but won't hold a massive suitcase. There are wide, metal shelves that are very useful, and some rooms have a rail in the bathroom for hanging clothes. Sheets can be quite old and worn. Blankets and towels are provided free but there are no duvets. Be aware that if you are a light sleeper, this may not be the place for you -- the party room is adjacent to some of the bedrooms and very loud, thumping music is played late into the night.

Some dormitories have a television and their own kitchen. This could be problematic if you are sharing with people who don't clean up after themselves or food is left out, which attracts insects. The bathrooms look modern have a shower in the bath besides the sink and toilet. There are also a couple of individual toilets off the courtyard if needed. We regularly noticed cleaners going about their duties.

Common Spaces

This is a sociable hostel. A free breakfast is served (you don't get to help yourself) in the outdoor tiki garden, a leafy enclave with tables and chairs at the rear of the property. There is the choice of toast or cereal and occasionally a whole banana or orange. The public kitchen is colourful and functional providing hobs, ovens, and a microwave. As a lot of the bedrooms have a private kitchen, it means fewer people mixing in the public one.

The TV room has a couple of public PCs but not a vast amount of seating and this room seems underutilized. People mostly gather outside around the tables on the courtyard. As these are just outside the rooms it gets very noisy in the evenings. The party room also borders the courtyard and has a small stage, where there is a weekly karaoke session for the musically inclined, which can be heard even if you don't attend!

There are nightly activities planned out in advance and you can get a list of these when you check in. Sometimes these are in-house like a ping-pong or pool tournament, tacos, or a paid meal. Three times a week you can pay to join the the "Tipsy Tour," a one-hour party bus limo ride with drinks, which takes you to a bar. Twice a week, there is the chance to pay for a trip to a club. Be aware that sometimes the shuttle ride is only one-way and you have to make your own way back to the hostel. This is true of the weekly trip to their sister hostel in West Hollywood where you can get BBQ and see a comedian on the property.

Summary

This hostel has a chilled-out vibe and is suitable for easygoing travelers. By the evenings, it can be a very lively (and loud) place to stay. There are lots of social opportunities provided but if you prefer to keep yourself to yourself then you can do that too. The courtyard also provides a ping-pong table and basketball hoops -- good fun if you are taking part, but again the noise echoes into the rooms so it's not so much fun if you are wanting to sleep.

Its location makes it suitable for exploring Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard just to the south. It has good public transport connections -- it is a short ride on the underground to go to the downtown area, but far from the beach -- it's about one-and-a-half hours by bus. Whether this hostel is right for you depends on your personality type and which location is going to best suit your plans whilst in Los Angeles.

3   Vibey Definitely Vibey. Cool facilities downstairs like basketball, foosball, pool ... Rooms were a bit junky. Some weird folk staying here. Transient looking types that snored super loud.  , age 30, USA ()
5   Nice people, clean rooms, cool place, friendly staff I only stayed here two nights, but could easily have stayed a lot longer. All the staff was friendly and answered our questions patiently. They helped us park the rental car. We stayed in a 6 people mixed dorm room (we were three) and were lucky with our room mates too! Handsome, nice guys. The food was very good, and the rooms were clean. The only negative thing was how simplistic the breakfast was. But honestly, it's all about expectations. This is a hostel, so by those standards the breakfast was good. (And it tasted good.) Easily accessible laundry machines and a cozy back yard with chairs and tables. I don't know what else to say but that I recommend the Banana Bungalow hostel in Hollywood!  , age 20, Norway ()
5   Great party hostel Really cool vibe to this place. Courtyard and a tv/pool table area in the middle where people meet up before parties. But things were all organised and clean still. Maybe not the place if you definitely want peace and quiet though.  , age 25, English ()
3   Clean place but not many girls I came in December and it was quiet. I was not keen for LA to be the way I saw it. I met a lot of Aussies. I just came from there and id rate it better than most. It would probably be better with summer. Clean place for sure. Breakfast should be better. The free BBQ rocks!  , age 23, USA ()
4   Great place Place very good, the atmosphere is great, one excellent localization and have parking inside. The rooms have kitchen, and bathrooms. Definitely value the price.  , age 23, Brasil ()
5   Clean, good location, good breakfast The breakfast is served up nicely as porridge, cereal and toast with a selection of spreads. The bunk dorm rooms are good and spacious but of course the private rooms are much nicer. The WIFI drops in an out so don't rely on that. Plenty of evening and recreational activities to keep you entertained if you're not already running around LA.  , Australia ()
1   The worst hostel in the world that is not hostel but club. they are so crazy. they held party everyday from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. who can sleep? and i waited to check in for four hours. (i arrived at there 12) and on their website we can check their tours. but actually they dont have tours. also, i wasnt provided pillow and blanket. and one room had fourteen people and only two bathrooms. they use drugs. these are true.  , japan ()
4   The rooms have en-suites -- that's pretty good! It's like a little budget hotel for the price of a hostel. You really can't complain! Bathrooms in each room, a nice, large communal courtyard where everyone sits and chats, and free breakfasts. Only issue I had was that I had to check out super early (about 5 a.m.) and was told the security guard would let me out of the gate. After wandering around for ten minutes, freaking that I'd miss my shuttle, I found him asleep on a couch in the TV room -- not much of a security guard! It all worked out in the end.  , Australia ()
