The Hostelz.com Review
YMCA Christchurch Hostel can feel a bit impersonal because of the size of the YMCA building, but the staff are extremely helpful and warm and the entrance to the building is clean and well organized with a functional courtyard with a full service coffee shop.
Location
Just across the street from the Arts Center, the Christchurch YMCA is also in a prime spot for visiting the Botanical Gardens -- which boasts the finest collection of exotic and native plants in New Zealand. It's well worth the visit -- don’t forget your camera!
Rooms and Bathrooms
There is an elevator, which you will appreciate while hauling big backpacks to rooms on the fifth or sixth floor. The dorm rooms are simple and bare with plain walls, painted white metal bunkbeds, and no real décor of which to speak. That said, the whole building is spotless and quite modern looking. There are also standard rooms, deluxe rooms with TV and telephone, and even a couple apartments complete with their own kitchen and living area for big groups of up to six.
The bathrooms are shared and there are quite a few to choose from on each floor. Small but functional, they too lack personality but do the job.
Common Spaces
There are small, fully functional kitchens on every floor with complete cooking facilities. There are coded locks on the kitchen doors so foodstuffs are kept safe. There are also plenty of storage cupboards and fridges for those who choose to take advantage of this convenience.
The communal TV lounges are small and tidy but don’t seem to be used much. It doesn’t seem to be much of a gathering spot but more of a hideaway for those seeking quiet. There are a few coin-operated internet stations down on the main floor and apparently there will be Wi-Fi throughout the building by fall 2011.
Summary
There is a distinctive university feel to the place, which is pronounced by the cafeteria-style dining room that serves breakfast and dinner. Perhaps one of the coolest features is the fact that all guests have access to the many on-site facilities such as sauna, gym, squash courts, laundry, parking, twenty-four-hour staffing, and even a climbing wall. There is nothing like a good workout or sauna after a long day tromping around the Garden City!
