At Skagway Home Hostel, you are sharing Nancy and Frank's house, which is a different experience than staying in a traditional hostel. This is not exactly a home away from home, but it might be friendly when you're feeling lonely on the road.
The hostel has a private double room and three dorms (one with nine beds -- the annex out of the main house and three smaller ones). The house has two bathrooms/WC, a home kitchen, and a laundry. At six-thirty, the table is set up for eight (maximum number of chairs) and the kitchen can accommodate another four. If you are the cook for everybody, you don't pay otherwise, you can donate $5 into the kitchen jar. Same by breakfast if using the house bread, butter, jam, and so on -- donation of $1 to $3 is required. Otherwise you can cook for yourself (if space is available). There is lots of free stuff you can use for cooking -- you can pick up raspberries from the plants outside or there might be cherries on the kitchen table.
The only strange thing in this place is that even if charging a reasonable price, everyone is supposed to go on chore -- which nobody does -- so that dirty dishes might stay in the sink and dirt below your bed.
The innkeepers are well aware about the Chilkook trail and might be helpful. Nancy's brother, Dave, runs one of the shuttle company to the beginning of the trail. The house has a dog (Mitsy) and a cat (Sammy) -- this last one might share a room with you so be aware if you are allergic. You can just enjoy the garden and chill out -- it's a pretty nice place to stay if not planning to camp.
