The Hostelz.com Review
At Skagway Home Hostel, you are sharing Nancy and Frank's house, which is a different experience than staying in a traditional hostel. This is not exactly a home away from home, but it might be friendly when you're feeling lonely on the road.
The hostel has a private double room and three dorms (one with nine beds -- the annex out of the main house and three smaller ones). The house has two bathrooms/WC, a home kitchen, and a laundry. At six-thirty, the table is set up for eight (maximum number of chairs) and the kitchen can accommodate another four. If you are the cook for everybody, you don't pay otherwise, you can donate $5 into the kitchen jar. Same by breakfast if using the house bread, butter, jam, and so on -- donation of $1 to $3 is required. Otherwise you can cook for yourself (if space is available). There is lots of free stuff you can use for cooking -- you can pick up raspberries from the plants outside or there might be cherries on the kitchen table.
The only strange thing in this place is that even if charging a reasonable price, everyone is supposed to go on chore -- which nobody does -- so that dirty dishes might stay in the sink and dirt below your bed.
The innkeepers are well aware about the Chilkook trail and might be helpful. Nancy's brother, Dave, runs one of the shuttle company to the beginning of the trail. The house has a dog (Mitsy) and a cat (Sammy) -- this last one might share a room with you so be aware if you are allergic. You can just enjoy the garden and chill out -- it's a pretty nice place to stay if not planning to camp.

Too crowded, not comfortable Hostel feels like you are invading their house, cluttered, disorganized, dirty, no place to store personal belongings. It's quiet for sleeping and really your only budget choice in Skagway, so it's bearable for a night, but not much more. — Christy , US (2008-08-12)
So So at best Ok, I had really low expectations of this place just by looking at it on here. But, I was traveling through Skagway last summer and I think this place is the only hostel in town. Skagway is tiny! I stayed in the shed out back, which seemed odd to say the least. The main house is completely stuffed with crap -- very, very cluttered. Really makes it feel like you're staying in someone's house rather than a hostel. The owner did pick us up at the ferry and take us on a little tour of town which was nice, but be prepared -- although Skagway is packed with fun outdoorsy stuff to do during the day, I saw maybe two bars that were open past 9 o'clock. And the hostel definitely doesn't lend itself to hanging out there and having fun. Go to bed early I guess to save your energy for some hiking. Dewey Lakes is a fun hike -- go all the way to the Upper one, a workout both worth it! — Kelbo , USA (2007-09-08)
If you go, ask for the mixed dorm out back. It's the best option. The prices listed on their website are wrong. Indoor dorm rooms are $20 now, private room is $50 and only rented to couples, and the storage shed mixed bed dorm is $15 for a bunk. Linens (but not towels) are included in the price. The house, and even the mixed dorm, are completely stuffed to the gills with the personal possessions of this family (they live in the same building). We're talking major clutter, lots of dust, and in some places, a bit of grime. Don't count on refrigerator space -- there is none (it's stuffed full of personal food). You can use the kitchen, though you may not want to. Don't go expecting to see the building look as it does on their site. That picture is completely out of date. Add peeling paint, hundreds of empty flowerpots piled all around, clutter all over the yard, and things to step around on the sidewalk and you'll be okay. Shoes off when you step in (floor is rather dirty, though, so wear socks you don't care about!). Cat and children will walk right into your room, under your bed, whatever, if you stay inside. You will definitely want to stay outside in the dorm if you are allergic to pets.
Despite all of this, the location is very convenient. Of course, Skagway is so tiny that any location is convenient. — Froggy (2006-06-04)

This hostel is in an excellent position, location wise it is perfect. Skagway is a wonderful, scenically unbelievable town, with a rich and fabulous history and pristine air quality.
If you are looking for location, economical rates, and a comfortable bed with clean free linen, this is the place.
If you want a luxury bathroom, check into the hotel.
I enjoyed my stay in Skagway, and the affordable rates here allowed me to spend my money on sightseeing and the important things when one is on a budjet.
The owners were courteous enough, and if I were to go back to Skagway,I would stay there again. — alexandra (2006-01-13)
This is not a very hospitable place — the "common spaces" are the size of postage stamps, and it's dirty and filled with the owner's personal possessions. That said, Nancy, the owner, is a nice person once you get beyond her abrupt exterior. But the women's 6-bed dorm room is tiny and without any hooks or shelves for clothes, so that all our things were on the floor and we could barely move around. There's a tiny little sitting space in the upstairs hall (where the women's rooms are) with 2 chairs and a bookshelf full of tradeable pocketbooks (a nice touch). But being so small (and at the top of the stairs, so everyone walks through it to get to the bedrooms), it's not a comfortable space. The tiny kitchen is usually occupied by Nancy or her family. We were never invited to use it and I don't even know if guests can or not. And that's it for common space, unless you count the laundry area, right outside the only bathroom. — Barbara (2005-10-16)
