Hostelz.com Guest Reviews
2  Clean but Strict and Frustrating The single rooms are a good value and facilities are nice compared to other options in Christchurch, but the management can be frustrating to deal with. The hostel is purpose built and clean. It's Japanese owned and run so the rooms will be a little cramped and the mattresses stiff, but there are reading lights on each bunk and a heavy Japanese blanket which is useful as it can get cold in the hostel. It may be difficult to make friends as most of the guests are Japanese and tend to stick in their own groups as they don't speak English quite well. I was very frustrated with the management's strict policies and attitude. As this is Japanese run, a lot of their management style has been brought over from Japan, although I find this much more rigid than hostels in Japan. There are no cancellations or changes allowed. Days cannot be shifted if you decide to go away for a few days and come back. Unless you curse a lot and threaten to write bad reviews like a foul mouthed girl once did, you won't get your money back or changed to different rooms without paying more. Be warned that if you ship packages to the hostel they may not accept them and return to sender. I shipped camping and bicycle gear to the hostel and the manager rudely told me not to do it again because "this is not your address, so don't use it!" and the next shipment would be sent back.  , USA ()
5  I stayed here between November 2002 and June 2003, and it's one of the best places I've ever stayed in. The House was full of wonderful, warm and friendly people, and the prices were very competitive. Noriko does everything she can to get involved with her residents, and even though I was 12,000 miles away from London I felt like I was home. I will be coming back to Kiwi House one day!!  ()
