Central City Backpackers - Hobart is a good hostel -- it's what you expect, but not much more. We cannot say enough how helpful the staff are and how easy the late check-in is. Staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and they asked us what we were doing that day and had very good recommendations for food and for places to visit. There's also a lot of information and maps for planning your trip there, so if you travel unprepared like we do, you won't be out of luck!
The Location
The hostel is in a great location -- right in the centre of Hobart, walking distance from the Salamanca market, dock, mall, and rental car companies. There is parking across the street that is free after 6, till about 8. There is also free parking all over town especially on weekends.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Rooms are old and in an old building, but the mattress on our bed seemed pretty nice and firm -- it didn't feel worn out to me. Each room has old-style heaters -- our room had an additional heater that we used beside the bed because it could roll. Unfortunately it took up the only free electrical socket, so no charging anything for me or anyone else that would have been in the room (we had the room to ourselves).
Bathrooms have ample space to hang and hold things while showering. Locks are working but the bathroom was freezing because it was June, in the middle of winter. We've never sat on a toilet seat that cold! It's a good thing there is hot water! Two showers, two washroom stalls, and two sinks doesn't seem like enough for the number of rooms that they have but there weren't many people during our stay.
Common Spaces
They have great LCD TV -- lots of channels to watch in the lounge. They charge for the internet. There is a large area for eating, large kitchen, and storage area for food. Couches and furniture are overall very old but what you do you expect from a hostel? The building is very old and not much effort is put towards modernizing it.
Summary
Overall we think this is a good place to stay. The location is perfect, even for walking around in the cold. We didn't see any other hostels around -- there probably aren't that many choices!
