The Hostelz.com Review
Central City Backpackers - Hobart is a good hostel -- it's what you expect, but not much more. We cannot say enough how helpful the staff are and how easy the late check-in is. Staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and they asked us what we were doing that day and had very good recommendations for food and for places to visit. There's also a lot of information and maps for planning your trip there, so if you travel unprepared like we do, you won't be out of luck!
The Location
The hostel is in a great location -- right in the centre of Hobart, walking distance from the Salamanca market, dock, mall, and rental car companies. There is parking across the street that is free after 6, till about 8. There is also free parking all over town especially on weekends.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Rooms are old and in an old building, but the mattress on our bed seemed pretty nice and firm -- it didn't feel worn out to me. Each room has old-style heaters -- our room had an additional heater that we used beside the bed because it could roll. Unfortunately it took up the only free electrical socket, so no charging anything for me or anyone else that would have been in the room (we had the room to ourselves).
Bathrooms have ample space to hang and hold things while showering. Locks are working but the bathroom was freezing because it was June, in the middle of winter. We've never sat on a toilet seat that cold! It's a good thing there is hot water! Two showers, two washroom stalls, and two sinks doesn't seem like enough for the number of rooms that they have but there weren't many people during our stay.
Common Spaces
They have great LCD TV -- lots of channels to watch in the lounge. They charge for the internet. There is a large area for eating, large kitchen, and storage area for food. Couches and furniture are overall very old but what you do you expect from a hostel? The building is very old and not much effort is put towards modernizing it.
Summary
Overall we think this is a good place to stay. The location is perfect, even for walking around in the cold. We didn't see any other hostels around -- there probably aren't that many choices!

Great staff, wonderful people i recommend it to all genuine travelers and backpackers. it's not the number of stars that count, it's a friendly environment with some friendly and helpful staff. — reyza , Mars (2009-02-10)
was here was a under a week and thought it was okay. The hostel was pretty old and not much character. Didn't see much of the staff but when we did need help they were helpful. Kitchen and tv area was okay but not many people were staying at the time. Luckily we had trips planned as this was the most boring hostel in Oz! Hobart was a really lovely city and i defintely recommend a trip to Port Authur! — Nicki (2006-07-09)
A relatively cheap place to stay but you pay for what you get. It is a dingy, rickety, and old hostel. It stands out in my memory as the worst hostel I have stayed at on my travels. — Sam (2006-03-19)

My boyfriend and I stayed here on a little trip to Hobart. We had a nice double room and the service was extremely helpful. They helped us plan some activities. Overall, it is clean but the building and facilities are old. — Emily (2005-10-23)

I was here back in 2003-4. The single room I stayed in was cheap. The bathrooms and toilets were clean. The downside was that someone broke into my room on my last evening in Hobart and stole my money. When I reported this to the girl at the counter, she didn't care and didn't even come up to inspect the door/room. I was leaving for Launceston the next morning, where I reported the theft. So, just be aware. If you travel by yourself and are in a single room, you might be easy prey for those who know it. On the positive side it is in the city center and an easy walk to lots of places. — Carol Christopher (2005-08-25)
It's good that there is a night manager. However, the dorms were far too small and there were too many bunk beds in a single room! The kitchen was not clean enough and the facilities were mostly out of order! — Paulina (2005-08-10)

The security code changed twice while I was there! I was in an all-girls dorm, and felt totally safe. There is a manager living there, and he was always available. He walked us down to the bakery in Salamanca in our PJ's at 1.00am! All the staff were very friendly. I recomend it totally. — Steph (2005-05-05)
