The hostel is relatively small with 2 dorm rooms (one 3-bed, one 6-bed) and a double room in the main building and another dorm (4 beds) just across the path.
The beds are a mixture of bunks and non-bunks, with one very narrow bed in the 3-bed dorm. The beds are all made up and are comfortable enough for a few nights sleep. There are heaters in all the bedrooms and the living area is heated by a wood burner.
The communal area is a decent size and has a large table with bench seating which encourages sociability. The kitchen is relatively clean and has most of the basics, though it could do with a few more pots and pans.
The bathroom and toilets aren't in great shape. The biggest problem with the hostel is that, in the mixed bathroom, there are only shower curtains for privacy. As the shower cubicles are only a standard size this means that you have to get undressed, showered, dry and dressed again behind the curtain.
All in all, the hostel is a little expensive for what you get and, if you are at all shy you might be put off by the showers. However, Glenorchy itself is beautiful and, since there aren't many budget options in town, this hostel is worth a look.
To get to Glenorchy Backpackers Retreat: from Queenstown, head into the village and turn left at the roundabout. The Glenorchy Hotel is on your left and reception for Glenorchy Backpackers Retreat is at the hotel bar.
