The Hostelz.com Review
Patio Hostel is very well located near the Bratislava town centre, where there are a variety of places to eat, a big supermarket, and sights to see. The hostel entrance is situated off the street through a driveway and courtyard but there is a brightly colored sign on the street just above the driveway that is easy to see. It's also not too far from the train station and easy to get to within ten minutes by taking the number 13 tram. The location and the price (given that it is significantly cheaper than any other hostel we could find in Bratislava) are its main strengths.

The hostel interior seems to have recently been coated with fresh paint, giving it a nice, modern finish in the downstairs reception foyer and common room. There are also some painted pictures in the hall leading to the common room, the walls of which are fast becoming covered with hand-written sentiments from people who have stayed there. The common room is quite spacious and is laid out with dining-style tables and there are two computers in the corner with free internet access on a Linux system.

The decor in the corridors/foyer areas of the upper levels (where the rooms are situated) is a little more sterile than the reception/common room area. The kitchen areas are located in not much more than a cupboard and are pretty basic. There is only a tiny bit of bench space, a few plates, a small amount of cutlery, a couple of pots, a kettle, and a double element cooker that plugs into the wall. So it's not really set up for preparing a three-course banquet but could suffice for snacks as long as no one else is using it at the same time. Outside the kitchen in a sort of foyer area between rooms is a small fridge. There isn't anywhere on the same floor to sit and eat food so the only option is to go back to your room or down to the common room on the basement floor.

The dorm rooms themselves are clean and bright and have a decent amount of space. They have bunk beds with wooden lockers underneath that are big enough for a large backpack -- lockable if you bring your own padlock. There is also a wardrobe and a small table with a couple of chairs. We weren't shown around the hostel when we arrived, so we had to look around a little before finding the shower. The shower is clean and has good water pressure and sufficient hot water. There is also a toilet/bathroom (without shower) beside the dorm room we stayed in that is a little poky and is able to trap some interesting vapors for a decent amount of time due to the lack of airflow.

Overall we concluded that Patio Hostel was an ok no frills hostel given the price -- it's decent enough as long as you're not planning on settling in for too long.

Good
It was warm (we visited in december), bright, clean, cheap, and no problem when we turned up without having booked. Staff were courteous, friendly, and helpful. Ideally located not too far from the town centre but far enough away to be peaceful. We only stayed one night so weren't looking for anything other than to stash our kit whilst we went out around the town in the evening and then to get our heads down for the night. I'd definitely use this place again, though if you're looking for the creature comforts or are staying more than a couple of days it probably isn't ideal. Overall it is what it is, if you expect luxury then don't stay in a hostel.

Decent
The hostel is in a great location and for that alone it is worth staying. The employees were helpful but not outstanding. The internet is great, there are three computers and I didn't have a problem finding one available. The main problem is the fact that we came in July, and though I know it is going to be hot, our room was at least 15 degrees (F) hotter than the outside temperature, and there aren't any ceiling or window fans. I guess I'd just think that since their busy season is in the summer, they would account for the fact that sleeping in a 95-degree room is nearly impossible. (Not an exaggeration). So if you are coming in the summer, I would recommend either bringing a fan (not so convenient for backpackers) or requesting to stay on the first floor, which didn't seem as ridiculous as the other floors.

Hostel has good location, and the staff were very friendly. The room was pretty clean. However, the shared bathroom was quite dirty, and the toilet was horrendous. Plus, there was a serious lack of hot water.

A fair price and an above average hostel. While I was here they were remodeling the whole thing so it will probably be really nice next summer. Easy to find and in a good location. Free internet. I lost my wallet in romania and the lady at the desk let me use the phone for free to cancel my credit cards.

We stayed in this Hostel in July 2006. I thought is was too expensive and hygene is not one of their strengths. They advertise as the "newest" hostel in Bratislava, well, the only thing new that I could find was the sign outside. I don't know where the pictures were taken, but not in the hostel I stayed in! The bathrooms were old and falling apart with not warm water at all!, and there were no curtains in our room. In all fairness, they were renovating at the time so maybe the place will improve. Also, this renovation means you will be rudely awoken at seven a.m. The staff mentality was awful, and they overcharged us, by any standards but especially in comparison to other places in Central Europe. I am sure there are much better and cheaper places to stay at in Bratislava. The location is good, although Bratislava isn't big so most places will be close to the centre and public transport is great allowing you to go anywhere relatively fast.

I'm not sure where the pictures of this hostel come from, but they certainly weren't taken recently at the Patio hostel. I had the displeasure of booking and staying at the Patio Hostel twice, once in August 2005 and once in July 2006. In fact, the first time I 'stayed' there I never made it, but since I didn't cancel a full twenty-four hours in advance, they charged me anyway. At the time I thought 'ok, they probably couldn't get anyone else and had been saving a bed for me' in which case it would be only fair to charge me for the room. But when I arrived with my friend this past July, any illusions I held as to what had happened the previous August quickly vanished. We arrived between midnight and one a.m., our flight on SkyEurope having been delayed. Since the trams stop running at midnight, we missed the last one and had to walk along the tracks to find the hostel, not too difficult. But when we got there, the girl behind the desk couldn't find our beds. It was her first day so I kind of felt bad, but then two other guys came to the desk to also ask if she had found their beds. We ended up looking in room after room to find beds. I'm sure the people who were staying there appreciated that. Later, we were told by the manager that they had reserved only one bed for us and given the other away, which makes little sense because either we'd both be coming or neither of us. Finally he put us in a room which two people had booked as a private room. Organization seems to not be their strong point for it took a full hour to check us in for our reservation. The whole experience made me think that had I arrived in August, I wouldn't have had a room anyway. Moreover the hostel is currently undergoing a lot of construction. This means free, mandatory wake-up calls sometime between seven and eight, and lots of sawdust everywhere. It also looks much uglier and institutional than the pictures suggest. The 'free' internet is quite misleading because it's never free. The line to use it was so long in the morning, probably because of the wake-up call and lack of breakfast. They did offer free baggage storage which I had thought they were going to charge for. Had I made it to the hostel in August 2005, I probably would not have booked it again this July.

I stayed for three nights and enjoyed it to the full. The staff are really friendly and happy to chat. Dorms are a decent size with nothing but bunks inside, but they are comfy. Showers are pretty good when they heat up and the hostel was always warm (November is quite cold in Slovakia). The only drawbacks are the small common room and kitchens. But free Internet (two PCs) makes up for that. I recommend it to anyone going to Bratislava, especially as it so close to the center — 10% discount at the Slovak Pub was good, too (food ain't great, but money-off beer is always a good thing!)

I stayed here three nights and loved it. It's close to the town center and the Slovak pub (great bar/cheap restaurant). The showers were very, very clean and powerful. There was always plenty of hot water. The kitchens are small and could do with a little extra in the way of utensils, but otherwise are ok. The staff were friendly and the patio is a nice place to relax/barbecue.

This hostel was perfect; I couldn't have asked for anything more. The reception staff made the place, their English was impeccable, and they were so helpful, finding out train times for us, and other things. There's not that much to do in Bratislava but if you're going there, stay here. We booked an 8-person dorm, only to find it was actually a 3-person room and a 5-person room, adjoining, so we only had 3 of us in our room, a nice surprise! Met great people here, too. The common area is great for drinking and cards! Internet access helps, too. I loved it all!

Ah, Little Havana. This place was really good, which was lucky because it was the only one we could find! The three-person rooms are really cool, the security is good and it isn't that expensive. There is a really good restaurant that they give you a discount for, too.

March 2005
We stayed here three nights at the beginning of March. The beds aren't very comfy, but they aren't bunk beds, which is nice. Free Internet, sheets, and towels, but no breakfast. The kitchens aren't really kitchens if you plan on cooking and there's no fridge, but cupboards and silverware help if you're snacking. The staff were cool (they're funny when they don't speak English very well but still helpful and friendly), and you get a discount at Slovak Pub (a rad place!!) when you show your Patio Hostel ticket. Bratislava is cheap and beautiful!!! We loved this city!
