A clean hostel run by a decent owner The hostel is situated in Potts Point, next to the notorious red-light area, King Cross, near the famous Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. It is very easy to catch a train because the hostel is only about three minutes by walking from the King Cross Station. Dan, the hostel owner, was very nice to guests. When I emailed to the hostel, he replied very quickly and offered me a job. I stayed there two weeks and worked two hours every day as a toilet cleaner (ha ha ha) to have free accommodation. Yes, I did. So, instead of paying for stay, I spent that money for some fun in Sydney. Some other people were offered to work as the kitchen cleaner, room cleaner, room repairer. So, all rooms were clean, odour-free, and shiny (because we, the guest-cleaners, cleaned them every day). — Quang , Vietnam (2008-08-31)

brilliant hostel, would definitely recommend staying here! it's less like a strict hostel and more like a huge student house! awesome atmosphere, clean, great people, trips to the beach, and so close to everything! nice one, dan! — steph , UK (2007-05-09)

Palms was a great hostel! It was such a nice atmosphere and ther were so many nice people! like a big family. It's a home far away. — lars (2006-04-15)
this was one of the worst hostels i have ever stayed in, the toliets were unclean, the staff were useless, and the bathroom door was off it's hynges. DON'T STAY HERE!! — wayne (2006-01-27)
The annoying thing about this hostel is that it has the extras without getting the basics right. So, although we had a TV and fridge in your room, and there's an XBox and Sky TV downstairs, the bathrooms and bedroom were grubby, the kitchen never had any clean tea towels (and was pretty cramped), and it was very noisy. The staff were OK, and it's a shame because this place could be SO much nicer. — FunkyMunkey (2005-11-29)
This place really sucks. Bugs and dirt everywhere. Even the bedclothes smell like vomit. We checked out after one night. I recommend not staying here! — Alex (2005-08-23)

It felt like home, small and cozy, and everyone really nice! I loved it. It was a great start to our trip round Oz! Cheers Dan! — C-J (2005-04-18)

Nice place, very clean, and not far from the Kings Cross City Rail station. It has a small hostel community, with very friendly owners and people. My only complaint is that the owners and staff can be a little hard to reach. It took several tries to get anyone on the phone during normal business hours. And on the day we left, we told one of the staff that we had a train to catch and we needed to turn in our keys quickly. She said someone would be down in just a minute, but 10 minutes later with no one down to check us out, we had no choice but to leave with our keys and forfeit our deposit. — Alex (2004-09-21)

By far the best hostel that I stayed at in Oz. The people, the manager, and the atmosphere were brilliant. I met loads of great people, and it's in an interesting place. It has an amazing kitchen now that it's all been re-fitted. Where else can you stay that has FREE internet and FREE breakfast that's in the city? If I was to return to Sydney, this is the place I would be staying at!! — Charlotte (2004-07-18)

This is by far the best hostel I have ever stayed in! The people were wicked, and the owner was wicked, too! You have to stay here if you go to Sydney! My friend and I booked three nights here and ended up staying for four months! We loved it, and that's all I have to say about that! — Sophie Cooper (2004-07-02)

I loved this hostel, thought it was absolutely fantastic and made my stay in Sydney a very memorable one. I can understand people's complaints about the manager, but he does have a nice side to him. You'd get narked too if people woke you up every night and you had to get up at 6am to check people in, get the breakfast ready, clean the kitchen, do the hoovering, strip the beds, re-make them with fresh linen, do the laundry and check people out. How he manages it all is amazing. It's not your usual hostel type. It's very homely and welcoming, which is why so many people stay there for so long - maybe sometimes too long. When I come back up the coast in a couple of months I will be going back. It's made an everlasting impression on me and I would recommend it. P.S. It's not the manager who makes the place what it is - it's the people staying there - all you guys are great. (No offence to the manager.) — Me, Myself and I (2004-05-19)

Wow, what a hostel. I haven't been to many, but compared to the one I'm in now, The Palms is great. It has a fantastic staff and surrounding area. I'd recommend this place to every one who goes to Sydney!!! — Phil (2004-05-19)

This hostel would be rated great if it wasn't for the manager. The entire place is fantastic, the atmosphere is great and the people are great. But the manager ruins it almost entirely. Keep track of your days because he will try and shaft you when it comes to money. Careful what you do for him, because you could get screwed over. — Pissed Off (2004-05-04)

Stayed here for three weeks and found it to be the best hostel I have ever stayed at. Great people and tons of fun free internet makes it hard to leave. When I get back to Sydney the first stop I will make will be here. — Tim (2004-04-22)

I stayed here for 3 weeks and loved it. Had more fun here than any other hostel I have been in (even after 10:30). — Curious (2004-02-21)
