Travellers Hostel is the home of a Sri Lankan family who have converted part of it into a hostel. The dorms are large, comfy, and spacious, and there's a nice outside seating area, but that's about all you're going to get here. The atmosphere is dead and on off-season there will be few people staying here. It is, however, quite a nice place to stay if you want some downtime after coming from Sri Lanka's party towns nearby. Be aware, you will probably be woken up by the trains and the dogs nearby, though.
The Location
This a small town with one large road passing through it. Once you're on this road, head north (with the sea on your left) toward the north end of the town. You will soon see a large liquor store on your left. Opposite this, there is a small road, leading away from the sea. Walk down here. After you cross the train tracks, there is a right turn. Turn right here are you will see the hostel on your right after ten meters.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are spacious and contain comfortable beds. Each bunk includes mosquito nets -- which are definitely needed -- and there are plenty of fans to keep you cool. Small lockers are available and there's enough plug sockets for everyone. Unfortunately, the building backs onto a train track, therefore once or twice a night you will be woken up by a train. There are only a few bathrooms for everyone, but not many people can stay here anyway. The bathrooms are kept clean and have cold showers.
Common Spaces
In the front garden, there's lots of seating, but in the day this will be far too hot a place to sit. In the evening, you might see one or two guests sitting here, but most people will probably be out for dinner. The hostel, therefore, isn't really the place to make friends. Wi-Fi just about works, but can be very slow.
Summary
If you've come from partying in Unawatuna and looking for a secluded place to detox next to a beach, you'll enjoy this place. The area where you can snorkel with turtles is just a ten-minute walk away and there are lots of cheap places to eat nearby.
