The Hostelz.com Review
Batavia Backpackers is right next to the town information center and the drop-off point of the greyhound bus. On entering the reception, we realised that it doubled as a barber shop, with the receptionist cutting hair.
We chose to stay in a double room here as the dorm rooms look a little cramped. The place has recently changed hands and is currently undergoing some form of renovation or rebuilding.
There appear to be a shortage of facilities for females on the upstairs floor, but there are enough for the males. This problem is rectified with just a short walk down the stairs, as there are more facilities there.
Most areas are generally clean, but the kitchen could do with a little more attention. There are places to eat in the kitchen area and also outside. The television area is within the kitchen complex and therefore can be a little noisy if you are trying to watch something. Within the kitchen there are enough hobs and plates for cooking. It is lacking in cutlery though. There are lots of fridges, which is good, as many places do lack enough space for everyone's food. There are also some freezer compartments. They had a free BBQ whilst we were there and on talking to some others staying there, it appears that happens regularly.
The atmosphere is reasonable and most residents are quite chatty. Many workers use this hostel, so be prepared to potentially have some early morning noise. Shops are really close by at about a five-minute walk. We would stay here again if we were in the area.

Horrible I stayed here in 2008. After working in a remote place for a year I wanted a relaxing place to stay and meet some fellow travelers. Instead I was stuck in a massive dorm room with about thirty bunks. I was put in a room with homeless mothers and kids and people that had been beaten and who knows what else. I slept in fear, clutching my bag, phone, passport, and other belongings. I think its great that people who are in trouble have somewhere to stay but come on! We are travelers (having fun) we dont want to sleep in fear and listen to people crying in their sleep, or kids getting abused by their mothers, let alone pay for it! I cant believe this is a VIP hostel. I hate this place. It's creepy. Not a hostel at all! — chippy , Kiwi (2009-11-20)
Halfway house, not backpackers Upon arriving, it is obvious that it is a halfway house, not just a backpackers, although all the signage around town and advertising states backpackers. The signage out the front states "Batavia House including backpackers." It is run by a religious group and no alcohol is aloud on the premises. The kitchen was huge with plenty of fridge space, but upon opening a couple of the fridges, they smelt like something had crawled into them and died. The kitchen was in such a state that I couldn't bring myself to use it. However, the room was clean and the building is a stunning old building with plenty of history. — Michelle , Australia (2008-07-17)
Not a backpackers anymore -- a homeless shelter now Batavia backpackers is misrepresenting itself now. It is now owned by a local church which is using it as a half-way house for the homeless. We were not told that our fellow guests were all homeless until after we checked in and started talking to the other "guests." The new owners also require that no alcohol be allowed anywhere on the premises (a safety precaution given the new non-paying residents). They are using backpackers like us to offset the cost of running a homeless shelter and we resent this. — Daniel , UK (2008-06-17)
Thumbs down did not enjoy staying here, we checked in to a very rude lady at the front desk and the first thing she said is you guys don't belong at this hostel turn around and leave, we then convinced her to stay and that she laid down the rules and we all agreed. After and hour or two myself and the guys I was traveling with decided to tell her that we weren't going to stay here and that we were going to keep driving on to the next town, and she abused us and said that this has really pissed her off, anyways I would not recommend staying here. Or for that matter Geraldton, it's a hole. — drew , norfolk islander (2007-12-19)

I've been to Australia twice, and both times I stayed at Batavia Backpackers for a while, as my boyfriend has been windsurfing in Geraldton. I just wanted to say that Pete and Joyce are among the most friendly people I've ever met, and the place is really great. So do go and stay there!! — Jeanne Frost (2004-09-09)
