1  Attention, stingy staff, overpriced tours, Strict house rules! Hostal Donde German -- we stayed in the old and new hostel for 4 days total. We had a very negative experience here. When we wanted to check out, the owner German presented us a bill that had different prices from what we agreed on. Both my girlfriend and I were surprised since at first sight he seems like a honest down-to-earth guy. The actual difference was quite minor, $106.800 pesos instead of $99.300 pesos. When I tried to talk to him about the fact that we orally agreed on a different price, he got all rigid and arrogant and said that this is how they do it and I WILL need to pay their price; he was not open to negotiation. At that time my problem was not the minuscule price difference but the way he acted and would not see my point of view. I filed a complaint with the tourism office but their phone call to them did not change his attitude. I gave him $100.000 in cash (more than I owed) and a copy of my Chilean ID, and wanted to leave the hostal, he physically blocked my way out of the door, demanding full payment. He would not let me leave the hostal, threatening with a physical fight. We called the police and explained the situation; (at that time about 15 new travelers arrived at the hostal and witnessed this ridiculous scene). The police determined that he had no right to demand the higher price and no right to physically refuse us to leave the hostal. We left immediately. We are very upset about his behavior and urge other travelers to avoid this hostel. His wife, who runs the new three-story house on Brasil street, seems particularly money-hungry and rigid in terms of house rules, complements our conclusion. Instead, we celebrated an awesome New Years party somewhere else.  , Germany ()
3  Clean and comfy, but small and 10 minutes walk from town. We stayed in a double room in Donde German, despite being told it was in the town, we were relocated to the newer hostel on the outskirts of town. So check when you book. The hostel itself is based on an alpine chalet, with wooden interior and nice warm living space. The double rooms however are very small and you basically get a double bed and window. The walls are thin and you can hear any noise in the hostel. The toilets are very clean and have hot water, but the windows have no curtains, so anyone can see you coming out of the shower. The kitchen is large and clean, but there is limited facilities -- no toaster or proper kettle. The hostel has 2 decent computers with free internet and a tv and dvd player with limited channels. You have to remove shoes before entering and no eating or drinking in any part of the hostel apart from the kitchen. The owner speaks decent english and seems helpful. The trips offered are excellent and they will let you know if the weather is not suitable to visit the volcano. Overall its cosy, clean, and tidy, but it loses its appeal by treating guests like children.  , Scotland ()
2  Not recommended it is really a lovely place, but there are way too many rules! the worst: on the day of my checkout my bus was leaving at 9 p.m. i was sick and stayed in the hostel. i was reading in the common room when the lady came up to me and told me if i want to stay longer in the hostel, i have to pay 4000pesos extra. thats ridiculous!  ()
2  Ths hostel is a very nice, well maintained place, However, it is run with an iron fist. There are so many rules and regulations it makes for a very off putting stay. No shoes, no kitchen after 10 p.m., only use these pans (as owner keeps theirs there too), no food anywhere apart from kitchen, no talking -- it's endless.  ()
4  About 3 weeks ago they opened a new 'guest house' there's a huge kitchen - with no closing time and a really cool living area. It was also cheaper than the hostel. It's about 10 minutes to the main street. I highly recommend Vulcan Villarica and rafting through Volcan Activo. Joaquin and the team were professional, very freindly with cool little touches like a beer or a pisco sour at the end.  ()
2  This hostel looks really lovely, and it is, but if you're backpacking and want somewhere you can relax maybe this isn't the place, contrary to its excellent write up in the current Lonely Planet. We found the little things, like the rules, really detracted from our stay. For instance, the kitchen closes at 10 p.m. (That's no good if you want to relax with a beer at the end of the day.) There's nowhere to dry wet stuff other than the laundry, which in winter is freezing cold so there's no hope of success there. You're not allowed to eat or drink anywhere except in the kitchen, which as I said, closes at 10 p.m. All little stuff but it unfortunately makes staying at this gorgeous place feel more like staying in your auntie's house or at your mum's than having a holiday. But if you don't want to do stuff that involves getting wet, and you don't want to sit around drinking beers with your mates after a hard days climbing, rafting, or whatever, then its a nice enough place, I guess.  ()
