The Hostelz.com Review
Shantz Haus Hostel is located at 520 Fifth Avenue in downtown Courtenay. The bus station is located two kilometers away from the hostel, so you may opt to take the local bus if you have a heavy backpack. Parking is available for those with a car. The hostel is located within easy access to restaurants and shops.
Shantz Haus Hostel offers both private and dormitory accommodation. A fully equipped kitchen and dining area are available for guest usage. Free tea and coffee are provided. The backyard has a seating area and a BBQ.
There is a large lounge with music, games, a book exchange, a piano, and two comfy sofas. The lounge is spacious and comfy and without TV. It provides a nice social environment to chat with other guests, and perhaps to play a board game, or to try one's musical talent on the piano.
The hostel is owned and managed by Susan Shantz, who gladly gives travel and tourism advice to her guests. Guests are encouraged to make themselves at home. Susan is very friendly and approachable and is often found socialising with her guests. She also owns two adorable cats, Jake and Gizmo, who are sure to be a hit for those who like feline friends.
There are two dorm rooms which have lockers, linen, and individual reading lamps. There are also two private rooms which can sleep up to three people. The bathrooms are kept incredibly clean but there is only one shared bathroom with shower, so you might find yourself waiting at times.
Afternoon office hours are officially from 4:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. but you may be greeted by the answer phone more often than not. However, it's well worth ringing back or sending an e-mail, as it really is a lovely place to stay.
There is no computer at the hostel but if you have your own laptop, free wireless internet is available for your use. There is also no laundry service available at the hostel, but Susan will direct you to a nearby launderette if you have run out of clean clothes.
Overall Shantz Haus Hostel is clean, comfortable, and safe and provides a home away from home for travelers of all kinds. Its friendly atmosphere and homey feel make it a great base to explore Courtenay, Comox, and beyond.

Great friendly warm hostel with a very well stocked kitchen! This was our favourite Hostel in all of Canada. We had two and a half weeks in Canada and spent a week of that here just because we liked it so much. Susan is a lovely hostess and the hostel is a warm friendly place. It's not too noisy (street noise) close to a supermarket and the downtown shopping area, and the kitchen is well stocked with all sorts of herbs, spices, pots, pans, plus a gas stove! We really enjoyed our stay here. — Josh and Maria , New Zealander and German (2010-06-25)

Excellent We stayed for three days. In that time it went from full to empty. Either way, the place was grace. It was clean and very comfortable. Moreover, Susan is extremely warm and helpful. Would recommend this place! Lots to do in the Comox Valley area and with Strathcona Park nearby. — Tom , Canada (2007-08-01)

This is a great traveler's hostel; it definitely feels more like a B&B. Comfortable, mature atmosphere. I met travelers from the UK, Japan, Canada and Switzerland while I was here, and shared meals fresh from the market, wines, a great evening book discussion and a fire on Goose Spit (a must, you can have fires on the beach year round!). I will definitely go back. It's NOT a skier's party house! — Lone Stranger (2005-09-27)

I stayed here in March. It was very quiet, as only one other guest was here, so we had the run of the place. The best thing going for this hostel is the location — a block to some great coffee shops (I love my morning espressos!) and quite a variety of restaurants — from "Global" to a genuine "mom and pop" that is located right inside a grocery store. It is sort of like going back in time about 50 years.
Courtenay is a walker's paradise — besides all the usual walks through the parks, there is one remarkable "River Walk" that goes from downtown out to a big estuary complete with swans, Canada geese, and an airstrip! We had a great time here, and will be coming back when we have more time. — Alan (2005-03-18)

This place is cozy, and in a great location. Great facility. — Anonymous (2005-03-03)
