Shantz Haus Hostel is located at 520 Fifth Avenue in downtown Courtenay. The bus station is located two kilometers away from the hostel, so you may opt to take the local bus if you have a heavy backpack. Parking is available for those with a car. The hostel is located within easy access to restaurants and shops.
Shantz Haus Hostel offers both private and dormitory accommodation. A fully equipped kitchen and dining area are available for guest usage. Free tea and coffee are provided. The backyard has a seating area and a BBQ.
There is a large lounge with music, games, a book exchange, a piano, and two comfy sofas. The lounge is spacious and comfy and without TV. It provides a nice social environment to chat with other guests, and perhaps to play a board game, or to try one's musical talent on the piano.
The hostel is owned and managed by Susan Shantz, who gladly gives travel and tourism advice to her guests. Guests are encouraged to make themselves at home. Susan is very friendly and approachable and is often found socialising with her guests. She also owns two adorable cats, Jake and Gizmo, who are sure to be a hit for those who like feline friends.
There are two dorm rooms which have lockers, linen, and individual reading lamps. There are also two private rooms which can sleep up to three people. The bathrooms are kept incredibly clean but there is only one shared bathroom with shower, so you might find yourself waiting at times.
Afternoon office hours are officially from 4:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. but you may be greeted by the answer phone more often than not. However, it's well worth ringing back or sending an e-mail, as it really is a lovely place to stay.
There is no computer at the hostel but if you have your own laptop, free wireless internet is available for your use. There is also no laundry service available at the hostel, but Susan will direct you to a nearby launderette if you have run out of clean clothes.
Overall Shantz Haus Hostel is clean, comfortable, and safe and provides a home away from home for travelers of all kinds. Its friendly atmosphere and homey feel make it a great base to explore Courtenay, Comox, and beyond.
