Awesome staff, BEST EVER location Traveling around Australia I have stayed at so many hostels but this one has been the best so far! Everything i wanted to do in Cairns was so easy to get to, the lagoon is across the road and so is the reef terminal so i only had to walk for 4 minutes to get on the boat for the dive trip I did. The staff always talked to me and made me feel welcome which is a nice change from most hostels Ive stayed in where they forget about you after you check in! Guy who worked there kept coming into our room and shouting at us in the morning for no reason, saying we were too loud when we weren't and that we had the air conditioning on too much. Absolute twat! I was traveling alone and a couple of the people in my room may have been a bit loud on occasions, but thats no reason to kick everyone in that room out when everyone is traveling separately! Too expensive for what it is too, the hostels along the sea front are all too expensive, stay in one further back.
As for people who say there is a "free meal" next door, the free meal i used to get was smaller than a kids portion, absolutely tiny! so yeah, its free, but dont base staying here on that because you will need to buy some more food to fill you up! therefore all in all, the international hostel is wank! — Jason , British (2008-11-09) Awful! Don't bother staying here Room was dirty, poor bathroom facilities, very noisy central open corridor running throughout height of building. However, I would recommend you NOT use their booking service as they seem highly motivated by commissions and misled me as to what I was included on the dive boat, so I ended up paying for things like certified dives that they had told me were included. — Craig (2007-01-22) This is a good hostel made superb by the staff. Basic rooms, great views, and a free meal every night. Given its location, the free dinner next door, and the budget price, it hardly matters that the double room we had was basic. Staff were helpful and the free meal in the pub next door was a nice touch. — Graham (2006-02-12) GOOD POINTS: The hostel is in a fantastic location, overlooking the lagoon and right in the heart of the nightlife. Saying this, it's a relatively quiet hostel for its location. The reception staff were friendly and helpful, and the tour desk provided excellent service. The kitchen was modern and very clean. The lounge area is a really cool place to hang out, with widescreen TV, and balcony views of the esplanade and lagoon. The rooftop deck was great for sunbathing. I made some great friends in this hostel.
BAD POINTS: I had my camera stolen while I was at this hostel. The security staff were very unhelpful in this matter, and nothing was done to investigate the incident. There is a permanent resident of the hostel who wanders around ordering guests about and upsetting people with his rude manner, often smelling of alcohol while doing so. I was informed by the staff that he used to be a previous employee, but now he tends to forget that he no longer works here. Numerous people were offended by this person.
