The Hostelz.com Review
Belongil Beachouse is a relaxed hide-out that allows travellers to escape the crowds typically found at the more well-known backpackers in Byron Bay. In this regard, the guests tend to be slightly more mature but there is still fun atmosphere nonetheless. Most guests are between the age of 20-25, although the hostel consistently attracts alternative lifestyle travellers in the 35+ age range.

Located on Belongil Beach, the hostel is a 15-20 minute walk from Main Beach and the town center. A shuttle bus runs regularly to the town all day long, with the last bus at 9pm. Unlike some of the other backpackers in Byron, Belongil Beachouse does not have its own swimming pool - although it is only a two-minute walk to the beach.

The dorm rooms are large and relatively clean and the washroom facilities are modern. There are plenty of common areas around the hostel including a TV lounge, outdoor picnic tables and a nearby outdoor cafe. The kitchen is large and cleaned regularly, with ample fridge and storage space for food. In addition, some of the dorm rooms are equipped with small refridgerators. Surfboards, bicycles, and boogie baords can be hired from the hostel at very reasonable rates.

Slightly more expensive than some of the neighbouring hostels, the room rates become progressively cheaper if you book ahead and stay for longer periods. If you are planning to spend more than a few days in Byron, you can get yourself quite comfortable at Belongil Beachouse and even forget that you're staying at a hostel. Overall, this hostel is guaranteed to provide a relaxing stay without becoming overrun with young travellers jumping off the Oz Experience bus.

We stayed here for two nights in December 2004. The Belongil BeachHouse proved to be a really good place to stay with many redeeming qualities. It is located around five to ten minutes outside of the main town which is easily accessible (and fairly cheap) by cab or through the free minibus service that went to and from the centre until around 9 p.m. The dorm room that I was in was fairly spacious and the bunks were comfortable. The en-suite bathroom was large and pretty clean (by hostel standards anyway)! A short walk away is Belongil Beach which you should definitely visit, particularly with a surfboard or boogie board that you can hire for free from reception. When we were there, internet access was only provided by a lone computer that had a virus and shut itself down after only a few moments. I would imagine that it's been fixed by now. There is a really chilled out atmosphere to the place, there is a large TV lounge/communal area to make it sociable and overall it was a very pleasant hostel indeed. Also, whilst in Byron Bay, make sure you spend at least half a day out at Nimbin.

probably the best hostel i stayed in during my travels. Rooms are nice, big, and clean, the bathrooms also. the kitchen is ok. the hostel is situated perfect, belongil beach is never too crowded so you can enjoy your time at the beach and relax. i actually wanted to stay just a couple of nights, as i left i had worked at the hostel for a couple of weeks. first reason for that of course the beautiful, genuine, and fun people i met. so if you want to relax and meet great people this is for you.

Good clean accommodation that is too far from town with the buses finishing at 8:55. Mature people? No. Never failing to attract sleazy old guys and wankers. Would recomend it only to people with cars who are in groups. I had been here five times, but never again. It is slightly cheaper and often has beds when the others don't. Maybe it is being marketed wrongly? But the people have a fair impact on the experience.

I stayed here just for one night - but I really enjoyed it! What a nice atmosphere. Well equipped kitchen, clean facilities and pretty close to the beach, if it hadn't rained, we had probably heard the waves... Not the party place in town, but a nice place to meet lots of people!

The best place to stay in Bayron Bay! I stay here at least once a year and I always love it!!! Very relaxing. Highly Recommended.

Yes, our double room certainly had the most comfortable bed we've ever slept in on holidays. A great mix of people and clean facilities — what more do you want from a hostel? I think the great appeal of Byron is that anyone is welcome, and you can be comfortable in who you are. This is certainly true at Belongil. There was a mix of ages and people from OS [overseas]and OZ [Australia]. But if you are looking for a party place, it might not be for you. Although, you can still party in town. It is so peaceful at night, you can hear the waves crashing. And we highly recommend a lazy afternoon on the hammocks.

I found Belongil BeachHouse fantastic. I was there in 1992, and met so many wonderful people, both travelers and locals, and especially the folks who worked at the hostel itself. The grounds are beautiful, it's close to the beach, and the air everywhere is bright, relaxing, and warm. A must-visit for anyone who wants to taste a piece of heaven in Australia. Don't forget to spend some time on Main Street in town, it blossoms with energy and spirit.

Pretty relaxed, friendly but not too clean. There was sand EVERYWHERE! But after all, you are in Byron Bay! There was a nice cafe next door and the beach is within walking distance. HOWEVER, it is a pain in the butt trying to get a transfer to the main shops. If you walk it could take you a good 30 minutes! My advice would be to stay nearer the town. Oh, and a visit to NIMBIN is a MUST!

This hostel is very special. It has a beautiful place and location, nice wooden floors in the rooms, friendly staff and it seems to attract great and open people, too. It's so easy to chat away and just relax. Time flies, and be prepared, you might stay much longer than you intended to in the beginning. It has a big kitchen and it's so well organized, food storage by room numbers — no more searching in the fridge for hours.

I love this place! I stayed here with my parents 15 years ago and loved it then, and it could only have improved since. It really is amazing and beautiful. I was there last year with my boyfriend and it was just the perfect place to stay for a wonderful beach holiday. All the kitchen and bathroom facilities are clean and well kept, the garden and barbecue area is like a tropical paradise, and it's so close to the beach. The shuttle bus makes it really convenient to get into Byron, but it doesn't take very long to walk along the sand anyway. Don't let the distance put you off, this place is the best ever!

This is a great place, with a great location and staff. And indeed, it's only 200 meters from the beach! It has limited free shuttle transport into the city center. It's suitable for all ages and has a relaxed and quiet atmosphere. The price for the twin was fair for this overpriced town. We would have loved to give it five stars if the showers had been a little more inviting.

This place is just AMAZING. Just go and stay there, you will not regret it. There are no problems getting into town, since you can borrow a bike for free. There are free buses that travel from the hostel and back frequently throughout the day. The common areas and the kitchen are also superb. Thanks for a lovely stay!!!

My boyfriend and I trekked up the East Coast and chose to stay in this place because the double rate was the cheapest in the area. Although we felt people were a little more aloof than in the other hostels, we loved the sanctuary feeling and the walk on the beach into town. If you are looking for a party place, this is NOT it, but if you want a gorgeous beach coupled with quite and calm, this IS the place.

BEAUTIFUL place. My friends and I couldn't believe that this was a hostel--it looks like a resort. It's absolutely awesome: the commons area is beautiful, and the kitchen is wonderful. It's got tons of character (like tile mosaics on the floors). Our room had two bunks, a double bed, and an en suite bathroom. The room was beautiful, with huge picture windows and a spotless bathroom. The beach is very close, and we had a car, so of course it was easy for us to get to town.
