The Hostelz.com Review
Port Macquarie is an ideal place to break the journey when travelling the East Coast. There are some great beaches and the port is also the koala capital of Australia!

Port Macquarie Backpackers Hostel is located 800m from the town centre and coach station. And the friendly owner Tony will pick up and drop off guests for free. The hostel has quite a sociable atmosphere with a few areas to chill out such as a small pool, free pool room, and TV room. There are also internet facilities for $1 for 10 minutes.

The kitchen could be better equipped, however it is spotlessly clean and a great place to meet people. The ladies' and men's bathrooms rather resemble a public lavatory, with small cubicles for showers and toilets. The showers are hot and powerful, however they are strangely very low down so unless you are quite short, it is likely that you will have to crouch a bit!

There are about eight dorm rooms which include bunk beds and all linen. They are also very clean, however there is a lack of power sockets in all rooms which is a pain if you need to charge electrical items.

Overall, this is a friendly, clean, and chilled out hostel. However although there are lots of facilities, they don't seem to be large enough to cater for all the guests that the hostel can hold.

5 Excellent, what more could you want
You get collected and dropped off from bus stop, free pool table, nice clean pool, free DVDs, bikes, nice coffee shop over road, nice owner, great atmosphere. Nice little town plenty to do, Camel rides, surf lessons, free koala hospital, and much more. Clean rooms and clean kitchen, veranda, bathrooms nice and new. Few days isn't enough! would recommend to all!

5 Chilled and fun
I stayed there forfive nights having come for an overnight stay en route to Byron via Coffs. There was a great atmosphere in the hostel -- really friendly owner and happy backpackers who had also extended their stay. The hostel offered free bicycles, free internet, and breakfast so I filled my days sightseeing found a vineyard and saw dolphins and Koalas in the wild. Having bikes made it really easy to see everything and then the weekend came so spent that out in bars and clubs so had it all. Is winter so swimming was out but man the beaches are something else here and plenty to choose from. Was worth the cancellation fees in coffs for the extra days stay! Highly recommend a stay here but make sure you spend at least two or three days.

5 Great!
The owner picked us up at the bus station and dropped us off there as well when we were leaving. There's not a lot of rules on this hostel. As long as you don't make a lot of noise, more or less everything is ok. Good! Free Pool table. Free Internet. Clean and good kitchen. Pool with topless bathing permitted. Pizza hut deal -- large pizza for $4.95! Would stay there again!

2 Poor Management
Some of what is advertised is misleading. The internet is not free, the pool is only tolerable (and always dirty), and the manager (Tony) is completely full of himself. When I arrived I noticed that I had made a clerical error and double booked one night. I had planned to stay only five nights, but had reserved six. Therefore when I arrived, I told him that I would like to cancel for the sixth night. I figured that there would be no problem because standard business procedure for hostels is twenty-four to forty-eight hours notice for cancellations (I was giving him a hundred-twenty hours notice). I was told that "he would think about it." Of course, he never returned my money. This was completely mishandled and unprofessional. Tony showed no signs of following a protocol and made up his own rules.

2 Pretty poor
Well what can i say, this hostel was completely out of the way of anything interesting, we were pretty much forced to stay there beyond our will and i think the rooms were pretty much a dive, the owner who calls himself Tony or "Tony the tiger" as he refers to ever so much lies a lot and i wouldnt trust a word he says, especially about dolphins jumping into his back garden.

4 Great!
Clean, fun, and friendly place, can't really fault the laid back attitude and knowledgeable staff. Highlights have to be the colourful dorms, plenty of bean bags in the TV room, free internet, and free breakfast, tea and coffee. Only drawback would be the army style corrugated iron bathrooms -- hand soap wouldn't go amiss. Thank you PM Backpackers!

5 Great!
A great place to stay! We were looking for a small town to stay in and we seen Port Macquarie had lots to do! Nice pool, BBQ, colorful rooms, sheets provided, and a place where we met tons of people! The hostel itself was very clean and well kept! Tony was awesome, he drove us anywhere we wanted to go in Port Macquarie for free, which was nice for a change.

This hostel is really good. The internet is free and really fast. Bike hire and board hire is also free. The guy offers free pick-ups and drop-offs and is really cool. We really enjoyed our stay here.

5 This is the best hostel in oz, nothing comes close. It's clean, very friendly, and in a nice town with great beaches. Big Tony is a diamond bloke -- you must stay here.

5 one of the best hostels we've stayed in so far, very laid back, and the porch is a great place to meet loads of people while you get happily pissed. both chris (a leeds lad like us) and tony are both top men. would recommend this place to everyone.
