Friday Hostel Odessa is the right choice for you if you want to have easy access via tram to the beaches during day or night. It is close to the central train and bus station. Also if you want to socialize in the hostel, meeting other travelers in a lounge-style environment, this is the hostel for you.
The Location
The hostel is situated in a backyard. It is located four minutes on foot from the central train station, next to which is also the central bus station. You have easy access to the trams going to the beaches, which is good, as Odessa is all about beach life/nightlife (in the beach clubs), depending on the time of the day. If you walk to the promenade/downtown of Odessa it takes you ten minutes on foot. The hostel is under the building’s roof, so keep that in mind when you have lots of luggage.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel is new and has a modern, lounge-style interior design. The size of the rooms is good, they are clean and have really big lockers. Rooms have air conditioning, so you do not have to open the windows. Most rooms have their windows to the main street, which can be noisy. Also try to keep the windows shut -- there are lots of mosquitos. The beds and mattresses are comfortable; the bedsheets are good. There is one common bathroom for men and women with cabins for showers and toilets, which feels too crowded most of the time.
Common Spaces
Basically reception, common space, and the open kitchen are in one long-stretching room. The hostel sometimes feels like a lounge. In a room next to the kitchen there is an extra Playstation room with a huge TV/monitor. This is the kind of hostel where there is always lots of people around the common spaces. It is easy to meet fellow travelers -- sometimes they do not even go out, and instead spend the evening in the hostel. From the windows of the common space, you have a very nice view of the top of a monastery.
Summary
The comparatively long walk to the promenade or Derybasivska Street (main shopping street) and the stairs that you have to climb to get to the hostel are disadvantages. Unfortunately the staff are a little unreliable with the laundry, but maybe this does not happen too frequently. Regardless, this hostel is still excellent!
