Charlie B's Backpackers is conveniently located near the town centre of Christchurch, New Zealand, a wonderful city. The hostel is a large, fairly old building with Scottish architecture. The building is several stories high, with huge solid wood staircases.
The dorm rooms are pretty standard at Charlie B's, as are the showers and toilets. All facilities are clean and adequate. There are several tv lounges, with video games and pool tables as well. The kitchen is large and accommodates the high traffic of Charlie B's very well. There is a whole room that acts as the refridgerator, so you don't have to cram your stuff in with other people's in a tiny refridgerator.
The reception at Charlie B's is open all night long, which is always helpful in the case of late arrivals or unexpected needs. The staff is friendly and accommodating, the prices are pretty standard, and there is easy internet access.
While Charlie B's is not necessarily the best backpackers in Christchurch, it is certainly more than adequate accommodation. It's only a couple blocks from the train station and bus drop-offs, as well as Cathedral Square, and it's only a short walk to the weekend Artscentre festivities - a great arts, crafts, food, and music fair that is not to be missed.

Too crowded Separated showers would have been good. And the rat in the air-conditioning system was quite noisy. But the rooms were spacious and the staff was very friendly. But friendly colours would help. — B (2007-09-17) Good backpackers -- More than adequate My girlfriend and I stayed at Charlie B's in June 2007 in a double with TV for $65. We stayed at about half a dozen hostels on the South Island, and I have to say Charlie B's was towards the bottom of that list. But, as as someone else said, "Charlie B's is more than adequate accommodation." The staff were friendly, the kitchen well-equipped, and everything was kept pretty clean. However, it is a little large and impersonal, the walk from the Square gets annoying, and there simply aren't enough bathrooms! Nevertheless, if you need somewhere to stay, there really isn't a lot wrong with this place. — George , Australia (2007-07-28) Stayed in a double room, great plus for the spacious room, free towel and soap, and of course the TV! The kitchen area and the atmosphere is great, unfortunately a big minus has to be placed for the lack of freezer. Location is not too bad, it's about 10min walk to cathedral square and I found it to be a quiet place, no problems with traffic or anything like that.
