The Hostelz.com Review
Bumbles Bridge Backpackers Hostel is an inexpensive hostel located right in the center of town. It has many common areas and doesn't get too rowdy, so it's a good place to relax a bit; however, the staff are a bit unpleasant, so it can make for some uncomfortable situations.
The Location
Nelson is a very small town, and this hostel is located right in the center of it. It's a short walk to everything, and the bus stops almost directly across the street.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are comfortable and have sinks and mirrors in them, which is very convenient. The beds are very comfortable, and they also give you a clean towel when you check in. The rooms are a bit cramped, but not overly so. The doors lock securely, and there are options ranging from a private single to a ten-bed dorm.
The bathrooms, however, are dingy. The sinks, toilets, and showers all seem like they're old and in need of replacing, and there is no soap or towel in the bathrooms. The shower heads are also pretty short, and there aren't too many places to hang your things when you go in. But, everything functions fine, so it isn't so bad.
Common Spaces
The common spaces are made up of a small room with comfortable chairs and a TV, and a large room right off the kitchen that has a bunch of tables and chairs and some couches in the back. There's also a pool table and some board games. It's very comfortable, and people are frequently sitting in the large dining room, or at the tables outside. The kitchen is also very large and clean, with plenty of space for multiple people to cook and all of the cookware you require.
The hostel is pretty subdued, since it doesn't get very full, but most people staying there are friendly and up for a chat or a game of pool, without being big party people; however, the two who run it (who seem like relatively permanent fixtures in the hostel) can be a bit off-putting. One is incredibly grumpy and unfriendly, and the other is very friendly but often tells inappropriate jokes of flirts uncomfortably. This strange staff can make you uncomfortable, but it also creates an odd sense of community among the guests.
Summary
If you are traveling in a group, this is a good place because it is cheap and comfortable -- even if the facilities are out of date. But if you are a girl traveling alone, you may feel uncomfortable here, and you should probably look elsewhere.

Great place. I was stuck in Nelson so I looked for a backpackers, and Bumbles Backpackers was the first place I found. Great and friendly staff. If I went back to Nelson, I would go there without even thinking about it. — M .Johnson (2005-05-16)
