A very good experience I stayed at the Jamaica Inn July 21 and 22, and August 15, 16, 17, 20, and 21, 2008. I found the facilities to be modern and clean and was particularly impressed with how well equipped the common kitchen was. The staff were genuinely polite and friendly and went out of their way to provide special assistance when I had a problem (not related to their facility). I would recommend the JI to my friends and family members.

I enjoyed the hostel and thought it was a good place to stay. The proprietor, Michael McNamara, was very nice and fun to talk with. The kitchen was very large and had seating for twenty-four-plus, along with two sets of sinks and stovetops. There was also an oven, fridge (no freezer that I could see), and all the needed cutlery, plates. Although there are no bus stops in Sixmilebridge on Sundays, and much fewer stops during the weekdays and Saturday as there are in Bunratty, Shannon, or Limerick, it is a fairly nice village in which to spend a couple days. However, there is no wi-fi around town (there is free wi-fi in Shannon airport -- up to five hours a day). The "internet access" which is usually stated refers to the Sixmilebridge library, which offers several computers available for one hour/day and only during library hours. I feel that it was quite insufficient if one were relying on internet access for communication other than through email, as I was. However, a 20 Euro taxi or 5 Euro bus ticket to Shannon airport would give you access to wireless internet for your laptop. I never ate at the pubs, but I did shop at both of the town's grocery stores and found them adequate and accommodating for my meals. I also ate lunch at a very good French wine store and cafe. There are a few sights to see in Sixmilebridge, and it has a nice, small-town environment. I brought enough cash to get by, so I'm not sure if there were any banks around. I believe that there was an ATM in one of the grocery stores. I would recommend the Jamaica Inn and Sixmilebridge to anyone wanting to spend a relaxed day or two while recovering from jet-lag or just vacationing. Although there are several B&Bs in town, the Jamaica offers the nice atmosphere of a hostel with the chance to meet other travelers. In my room, windows to the sun that opened; nice drapes; controllable heater; bedside drawer and incandescent lamp; fairly nice shower with good, consistent water control (except hot and cold are backward from what you'd think); there's also a small window in the bathroom, facing the roof, that makes up for the lack of a fan; the toilet works well; there's a handy small glass shelf above the sink and a heated towel rack, along with a double-pronged coat hanger on the door. No TV in room but there are two lounges -- one with Sky (satellite) TV, a nice rec/TV room with a foosball table, couches, and a stereo, and a separate room to watch videos in with a couch. There are automatic lights in whole building, except in rooms, which were convenient and also more secure; well-marked emergency exit routes and supplied fire extinguishers; a very nice twenty meter by fifteen meter courtyard with rock paths, trees, and a soccer ball; a payphone which allowed 1-800, but not 0800, calls i.e. for calling cards -- also, you could purchase calling cards for ten Euro at the front desk. The payphone was not in a very private or acoustically-good area (lots of echoing), however. There is only one outlet by bed (three total in room, and an odd one in the bathroom), no secondary lock on the door for the occupant to secure (e.g. a deadbolt), bed blanket is one duvet (can't remove layers when it's hot), water in the whole building is old -- sporadic hot and cold and rate of flow, and no soap supplied in bathroom!

A good place for a stop over, especially if you're landing at Shannon airport late at night. Make sure you call them if you're arriving late, though. If you don't and you can't get in, the owner will debit your credit card the next day. He does warn you about this at the time of booking, but that's sometimes the last thing on your mind when your aircraft is delayed, and you've stood in line for a rental car! Also, watch out for the 4 percent credit charge that this hostel charges! There are nice friendly pubs in the area, but if you're looking for good pub food, try another village.

The hostel is a little out of the way, but if you have a car, it's fine. The hostel has good showers and hot water. The kitchen has everything you need and more! I loved the courtyard! It's very peaceful there! It's a nice place for families and people traveling alone. It's just a good hostel, what can I say? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
