The Hostelz.com Review
Kookaburras Backpackers is a motel style accommodation with lots of space. Dorms and various room types are available. Rooms are split into several units. Each unit has a shared bathroom and kitchen which means that there are not many people queueing up to use the facilities. Outside each unit is a table and chairs. This set up makes the atmosphere really sociable as you can get to know your neighbours.

The double rooms are large and bright with a TV and fridge. The kitchens and bathroom are really clean. A laundry is available for guest use.

Kookaburras is in a good location, just a couple of blocks opposite the transit centre on the main street through Katherine. The Greyhound buses arrive at the centre and you can also get a transfer to the Ghan train there. The main street is where you will find a supermarket, bottleshop, and restaurants.

A free breakfast of tea/coffee and pancakes is included in the price. The owners have recently taken over the hostel and are really friendly and helpful. The Kookaburra has a really great sociable atmosphere, but is not too raucous if you need to get some sleep.

4 Bill and Val were great, that I do remember! They were very helpful and kind to me. It would be a nice place to stay, too, only when I was there (in April years back) I was the ONLY person staying there! Yeah, I wanted privacy but it kind of creeped me out, especially when Katherine has a dodgy vibe! The motel-style dorms would have been great, too, EXCEPT that I spent the night in a huge unit alone while BUG after BUG after BUG crawled in under the doors and up the walls and in the bed and around my head. It was the most frightening night I ever spent (but it got me over my bug phobia!!! —sort of). I'm sure though, that when this hostel is busy, it's a great place.

5 Certainly one of the best hostels that I have ever stayed in, both in Australia and in Europe. Apart from superb accommodation and beautiful garden setting, Bill and Val make you feel like a member of their family. I have stayed there on numerous occasions, and recommend it very highly.
