The Hostelz.com Review
In late July 2008, the Backpackers Barn was the only hostel in the centre of Warrnambool. There is another hostel on the west side of town, by the beach, but it's a few kilometres from the city-centre and the train station.
The Location
Backpackers Barn really doesn't look like your typical hostel. It's situated above a pub and its neighbouring insurance consultancy, with a sign on the outside wall "Budget Accommodation: Ask inside!" So you need to walk into this small town pub, half full of tough (but nice) men and ask the middle-aged staff behind the bar about their accommodation.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The bright side is, if you've worked up the courage to do this, you might get offered one of their rooms for yourself, for the same price as a shared room bed, i.e. some AU$20. Excluding breakfast of course.
But the rooms are comfortable, with nice duvet covers and clean modern sheets, and a key for the door. The building might be a bit old, and the walk is sometimes a long one to the toilet -- as there is only one bathroom for each sex -- but at least you're in the city centre, within walkable distance to the famous Warrnambool whales (you can see them between July and September, on Logan's Beach).
Common Spaces
There is a small, rundown kitchen with a water kettle, a disgustingly filthy microwave, a toaster, and a few plates and cutlery -- just what you need to whip yourself a quick noodle-soup from nearby supermarkets (Coles opened in August 2008 one block away and there is an RGA supermarket four blocks away). There is also a dark TV room, where you can hang out with truckies and other roadworkers, or the very few backpackers who might have gotten lost here.
Summary
It's an experience to sleep at the Backpackers Barn in Warrnambool -- probably an easier and more pleasant one for lads who will easily blend in at the downstairs pub. For a lonely girl, it's more, well, lonely. But travelling is all about adventure, isn't it?

yay top spot good atmosphere it was a good week that me and my mates stayed there. good job — henry , orford (2007-07-16)

If you want a place to sleep, then this is a good choice. Right in the centre of Warrnambool, it is an old hotel (don't get confused: the sign will say: Victorian Hotel, just go in and check in at the bar), and it has no dorm rooms, only singles and doubles (I'm not sure, maybe there are no doubles, or maybe there are also family rooms). But, a single for just $18 (VIP discount included) is absolutely great. Reasonable bath rooms, the kitchen isn't very good, there aren't enough plates, pans or cutlery. For passing through, or for if you just want to sleep, this is a great and affordable place. — Max, NL (2006-12-03)
