The Hostelz.com Review
If you want to make new friends, be close to town and the gondola, and enjoy a good laugh as well as stunning mountain and lake views, go to Southern Laughter. This hostel is just a few minutes' walk from the bus station, shops, and cafes in the centre of town, and an equal distance from the base of the Skyline Gondola.

This is a great place to meet people from all over the world. The free spa pool is a neat place to relax and socialise. The hostel lives up to its name with funny cartoons displayed throughout the hostel and jokes written on the walls beside the carparks.

The backpacker units sleep up to eight people. Each has its own kitchenette, bathroom facilities, and TV. Other accommodation is also offered, ranging from self-contained en-suite rooms to four-bed dorms. All bedding is provided. Hot soup is provided free each evening at 6 p.m. You can watch your favourite programmes or a movie from the hostel's free video library on the large-screen TV.

To ensure the hostel is not over-run by fruit-pickers and seasonal workers, there is a one-week limit on staying there.

Very Good!
Stayed in a double room for five nights and it was great! Room was very clean and had a TV and free towels. There's a free hot tub that was clean but unfortunately only open until 8 or 9 p.m. They offer free soup and it was pretty tasty but it's the same soup every night. The place had a fun personality about it with comics and artwork on all the walls. About a block from town. Quiet. Staff was knowledgeable and was a great help when we were deciding which trips to do. Only complaint was that the bathrooms had very tiny sinks that made it difficult to wash your face or brush your teeth. Definitely recommended!

Amazing, well worth the trip to Queenstown alone!
This hostel came highly recommended and despite high expectations, this hostel exceeded all expectations. From the moment we booked until the moment we checked out, we had an exceptional time. The room was immaculate and the cleaning staff should be highly praised as everything about this hostel was spotless! The linen was fresh, the beds were great, the toilets and showers were clean and convenient. Seriously, this is a massive plus! Furthermore, the location was awesome and the staff are incredibly friendly. You can save money by simply booking activities through the staff at the hostel. An even bigger plus is their relationship with pubs and clubs within Queenstown. Two for one offers on beer, wine, and spirits can get your room costs back within a couple of hours! One of the cheaper hostels around, they compromise on nothing. An absolutely top place!

Stayed in a double room and it came with free towels and TV, room was also nice and clean. The hostel is located between Queenstown centre and the gondola, about five minutes to either location, and is far enough from the centre to provide some nice and quiet evenings. They provide free soups every evening and also a free spa which is great! Kitchen is well equipped and has everything you need. Plus for all the comic strips that are found all over the walls brighten your day!

The kitchen is good and they offer you TV inside double rooms. The showers were not so bad but their biggest problem is that it is absolutely noisy. We were under the kitchen. it means that we couldn't sleep. people make noise during all the night which means that if you want to take a rest after a long day traveling, forget -- I've tried and i couldn't!

Very unprofessional about booking! I tried to book a dorm between Xmas and New Years Eve in November. I was told I was too early and they only made bookings for the same month. I was advised to call again in the beginning of December to make the booking. I called early in the morning on the 1 Dec and I was told they had been taking bookings from earlier in November and everything was booked out. All I was left with was the "sorry" of the girl on the phone and ruined travel plans. Wouldn't think of dealing with them again!

Amazing hostel with amazing people staying there. The sheer number of open-minded, fun, and altogether wonderful people staying here awards this five stars immediately. And that's not taking into account the free soup, free hot-tub, great staff, social TV room, balconies, and dorms opening onto their own common rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. Apart from one other, this is quite simply the best hostel I have ever stayed in.

We loved it! was our home for a week over new year 05-06 and i loved every second of it! We had the fabulous room 13 which we made ourselves very comfortable in. Recommended to us by friends and then by us to fellow travelers! The cute lil dog winston was gorgeous to play with but do not feed him! Wicked place to stay, just off the main strip but so easy to get everywhere. Don't use the steep stairs in middle of strip, there are better ways, especially with a backpack! Oh and enjoy the spa, if you look through the wood you can see the mountains as you lay there! As you can tell it was definitely a fave of mine!

One word -- atmosphere! Can't beat the fun, friendly, cheerful atmosphere at this gem of a hostel. Was full of heaps of people desperately trying to get out of the infamous Discovery Lodge and into Southern Laughter. In fact, book well ahead because of how full this place gets. Location is great, just up the road from the Red Rock, but in a quiet enough area so you can get a good night's sleep. And the cheerful decor is fun for inspiring some good laughs (comics and fun quotes everywhere). The dorm room had eight beds in two rooms, its own kitchen and living area and bathroom, and ours even came with a couple of Scottish guys who played the guitar. (Not included in the price!). There were swings and hammocks outside, and fun slogans on the outdoor walls. The great TV room and common area had free nightly soup in the kitchen, there was a hot tub available for use, and the staff were friendly and cheerful. Queenstown is definitely a party town, but this is the place to stay if you want to meet others, socialize, have a good time, or just chill out and relax. Would not suggest staying anywhere else.

The twin room was tiny and bathrooms weren't very good. I was woken up by loud, drunk, puking girl, but the staff were very friendly and the hostel has a good location.

This hostel was great. The staff were really friendly and helpful. The free soup at 6pm was lovely. We had a double room which was really nice. There was one problem and that was the people staying there. When we were there, we were woken up all throughout the night by people who had been out drinking. Not the hostels fault, just rude people. I would recommend this place.

Great hostel, loads of fun, great clean rooms all with TVs. Free soup in the evenings and it's right in the center of town. If you're in Queenstown this is definitely the place to stay.

Really, really nice hostel. I would definitely come here again. The only thing is that they wouldn't let me stay longer than a week, which was annoying because I wanted to, it's that good. So I'm only giving it 4 stars; if they'd let me stay longer I'd have gone up to 5.

A wicked hostel, definitely one of the best I have ever stayed in. A must-do when in New Zealand. I'm not going to bother describing it — no words would do it justice — but if you don't go you'll miss out big time.

Fabulous friendly hotel with a buzzing atmosphere. The staff couldn't be more helpful and everyone was really friendly. The dorms and double rooms are so nice, with pink walls and funny cartoon pictures everywhere. It sounds odd, but it really works. The communal areas are spacious, immaculate and well equipped. The views from the windows of the mountains are stunning.
